It's official. There will be a short (about 40 minute) session on "An introduction to card counting". At some point, there will be a signup for it. It will be free for anyone at the bash.

I've always passed up previous opportunity to learn how to count cards because I was afraid they would be a waste of time.

It still works and always will. I am not attending the bash, since I am still a Noob, but if anyone needs some help or literature on this subject, please feel free to ask. I have a large working knowledge of this stuff. If I was ever flat broke, this is the first place I would go to get back on my feet again.

Pavy wanted to know if you have to know how to count to attend?

No. If you know how to count cards and already make 50k+/year, skip the seminar.

The target audience is "I know the rules of Blackjack. I know most of the basic strategy, but have never looked at counting seriously."

In 40 minutes, you'll learn the following:
1. What should I expect to make ($$$) by counting cards?
2. How do I learn to do this (you won't leave this seminar making $500 an hour, but you will see the path, and know exactly what you must do to do that)
3. What are the first few things to do if I want to do this seriously?

It will be informal and fun, although I'll give out a lot of good information.

The casinos only deal about halfway into the shoes, and almost all single deck blackjack is now the 6/5 variety. You'll be hard pressed to do more than just minimize your losses under these conditions.

The system I used to like to use was to count the tens as -1, and 2,3,4,5,6 as plus one and to keep a separate count of aces on my hand under the table. I never could really make money because I just didn't have the patience to last through the inevitable losing streaks and would begin chasing.

Most casinos deal at least 3/4 of the way into the shoe. The Nugget, where we will be staying, delt at LEAST that the last time I was there.

Blackjack is a nice earn if you're willing to work and put in the hours.

No, aces count ZERO so point values even out A separate count of aces is kept to asses the value of the deck for betting purposes. So you are keeping 2 counts, a point count and an ace count. I believe there were books written about this system (Hi-Opt?). The problem with including aces in a high count is that for dealer busting purposes, the ace is really a low card and this may lead to erroneous playing systems.

I didn't see any games I thought it was worth the effort to try and count on last time I was there. But then, I was only playing the $10 tables

Counting is only half the battle. Most people never learn basic stradegy. When you count it changes the way you play many hands which means there are several hundred more correct ways to play one must memorize depending on the count.

Its fascinating to learn. One must also learn that its a very difficult trade to be good enough to overcome the house's advantage. It only takes one mistake to wipe out a counters advantage.
