Default Do Spring training numbers really mean anything?

i remember a few years ago Mark Teixeira set a record for total bases in the spring and everyone was hyped by it, this year joba has struggled some and ive heard some yanks fans seeming concerned. anything to consider or is it fairly meaningless?

The Detroit Tigers had their spring training in Lakeland, Fla. where I went to college.

Numbers mean everything

Nope, too long of a season, no true closers at the end of games, kids that don't belong out there not making routine plays, etc.. The spring is more of an evaluation on a person by person basis. Plus, you can't expect a pitcher to be in perfect shape this early. That's the biggest factor in the Spring. Most pitchers arms don't strengthen to 100% until July/August. That's when you'll notice pitch speeds are at their highest. That's just a brief summary, I can talk to you about this for hours.

BTW, I'm not worried one bit.

Right. Follow baseball, spring training + regular season for one year, and this will become readily apparent.

Although, in certain specific instances, spring training stats can shed light that can be useful in the early going. For instance, a pitcher who is coming back from a serious injury. If accompanied by good (or bad) reports, good (or bad) spring training stats can be meaningful.

Nope, not during spring training. The star players usually leave the ballpark before the game's over. You're betting on major league hopefuls - minor leaguers trying to impress the coaching staff for a spot on the final roster.

Well put bradley.

As far as spring stats, I don't put much stock in them at all. An example would be Ichiro going something like 0-22 to start the spring before getting his first hit. Even if he went O-for the spring I wouldn't be worried about his hitting.

Only a small indicator for the first few weeks of the season. After that no.

For the purposes of betting, not one damn thing. Fantasy-wise its wise to keep track of whats going on but its a brand new season wager wise once the regular season starts.

Overall, or speaking in very general terms, the stats don't mean much. But suggesting they're entirely worthless is a bit ignorant. In the end, if you're not actually watching the performances and just looking at numbers, then they're just stats like any other stats. No player can be fully judged just looking at a few columns of cipherin's.

Well for betting it definitely means nothing. As far as for how teams may do at the very beginning of the season it could mean a little bit but there is no correlation between bad spring training and bad season starts either.

Pitchers are not showing hitters they will face in the regular season anything significant, and many hitters don't have the same approach they will have in April and beyond.
