Default Tipping in this country is getting out of control!

It seems to be getting to the stage where EVERYONE expects a tip, you can see it in their face if you don't tip. I'm from Australia where we don't tip anyone for anything because the minimal wage is much higher.

A friend told me that they were asked for a tip by movers after paying 2 of them $270 for a 3 hour job and they only moved a block away. He told them no. I'm not tipping, the movers got pissed off and started walking out but his mother in law stopped them and gave them $50 each.

The other day I was moving, another short move in the same suburb. They had to go up 2 flights of stairs so it was hard work for them but they weren't very careful and scratched up a couple of pieces of my furniture. I considered not tipping at all but they looked exhausted by the end so I decided to tip. There were 3 of them and I gave them $30 each. The boss seemed happy but one of the Mexican workers scrunched his face up in disgust like I just took a dump on his foot.

Tomorrow I'm hiring a house cleaner and a carpet cleaner to clean my previous apartment to help insure I get my $2000 security deposit back (I had to pay so much because I had no credit in this country when I rented it). How much will these fukks expect to be tipped? Personally I don't want to tip them at all. They are earning good rates per hour unless their bosses skimp on them, and if that's the case they should take it up with them.

How will they react if I don't tip? Have you every been confronted for not tipping or not tipping enough?

This bugs me too it is not my fault that these people do not negotiate higher pay with their employers. What really burns me up is when you go to a restraint and pick your food up you are still expected to tip even though you are not being waited on or when I have to tip a bartender for getting a beer out of a cooler and twisting the top off for me how about I twist the cap off myself???

In CR we don't tip as well, why? because all bills carries a 10% service fee

Im from Australia too, when i travelled the states for 6 months i found 10% was fair and if the group was over 8 i think 15-20%.

Of course travelling we had a few tightasses that wouldnt put in anymore then they had to.

On another note, if you do not tip and you DO NOT plan to use their services again, then what are they going to do.

The mexican worked probably earns Tips only for the removalist.

I heard a story bout 2 older woman 40+ stayed at a hotel, when they were down for breakfast they never tipped, the next day no one would serve them.

I tip waitresses & bartenders, because they make less than minimum wage, they basically work for tips & they work hard. I usually dont tip anyone who is paid a fukin hourly or salary wage.

Were I live we dont give allot of tips either. most bills have 10-15% service charge, I might add a few 10s extra if the service was perfect(or just leave them with the spare change..). tipping bartenders waitresses and dealers are normal for me.
I don't know what I find more shocking, people expecting to get a tip or tipping 100 on movers..

You shouldn't expect a tip. A tip is to be given on great service, nothing else. Thats how it should be.

i agree. tips shouldn't be expected for any profession and that should clear things up. restaraunts should just charge 15% more for the food and drinks and then they can pay their employees better. I guess the case against that is your service will be more poor, but you can always go to another restaraunt/bar instead then. ithink the difference would be negligible.

Btw do you tip a tow truck? I didn't tip the guy, he made $80 dollars for like a 5-10 minute trip. (altho maybe it wasn't his truck and thus he didn't actually make the $80)

Tipping is an incentive to bust your a-s for your customer. It works.

Compare restaurant service in Manhattan to any city in Europe. You can be in and out quickly with a quality meal and no bs (90% of places). Over there you'll sit for 3 hours waiting for mediocre food and tiny portions from a friendly but lazy waitress.

Same with cabs, delivery people, strippers, etc... My Chinese delivery guy gets here 10 minutes after I call because he knows he'll get a few bucks.

... however, the mover scenario sounds weird. You did the right thing. Fck um.

OmgUrMom, you may want to check your car insurance, or break off a call, I have towing and glass coverage so with the towing i just fax the receipt and then i get a check in about 10 days.

Tipping is important. I love tipping. I love the smile in her/his face when you tip. Don't forget to tip waitress/bartender.

Let me tell you a story about tipping.

Frank Sinatra is famous with tipping. One day, he asks park driver, "Whas was the biggest tip you ever received?" Driver answers: 200$. Sinatra opens his wallet and hands driver 250$ and walks away. Then he turns and asks: Who was the person gave you 200$? Driver replies with smile: It was you Mr. Sinatra

Bartenders, waitresses and dealers in casino if service is good. Only people who make less than minimum wage deserve a tip since tips are the way they make a living.

tipping for a service is understandable, tipping for somebody grabbing a beer out of a cooler and twisting the top of makes no sense to me I would gladly reach in the cooler and twist my own bottle cap off to save a dollar this is not an inconvenience to me at all. If I was getting a mixed drink maybe but I am a grown man I do not need somebody to wipe my ass for me for a fee there are some things that I am fully capable of taking care of myself with ease.

If somebody is catering to you with something that would be inconvenient for you to do and you want an incentive for good service tipping is good but somethings are simple enough to do for your self.

I do not need to pay for somebody to squirt soap in my hands after I piss and I do not need to pay for somebody to open my beer for me and I do not need to pay somebody for handing me a bag of food that I picked up myself.

I do need to pay for somebody to cater to me at a table while I enjoy a meal and some other services that are inconvenient to do for myself.

I agree with the OP it is out of control next you are going to have some guy at the grocery store stepping on the sensor to open the door as you walk in expecting a tip.

what he said. $2.13 an hour for a waitress / bartender is insane. They do work their asses off and I tip 20% - 30% if the service is good. 5% - 10% if I have to wait around with an empty glass which rarely happens. If they get me real drunk, I have been known to match the tab with an equal amount of tip. Flirty cute always helps!

Apparently we have posters here who actually tip the slot attendant when they win a jackpot. That is pretty stupid since some posters suggested giving the slot lady $100 for a jackpot of $3000. You really should give a dime in my opinion. The slot attendant does less work than the bathroom guy
