Default OT Question: How do you help someone with depression?

If someone is clearly suffering from depression (fits all the symptoms, sad all the time, etc), but they are too afraid or unwilling to go to a therapist / get on medication, what else is there you can do for them??

try to get them out of the house, interacting with others, and stimulated by something other than meds. create a different kind of momentum for their time.

get someone else to talk to him. you might have tried to hard and they need to hear from someone else

Also try to get them to exercise and try a yogo or meditation course.

There are self help books out there.

Reading about the problem often helps the person with depression learn about the problem of depression and seek help on thier own.

It's tough to go to the doctor when you have depression, because it's hard to describe the symtoms.

you need to talk with someone who has empathy, not a PHD.

Yeah good call...Some people also use imagery Cd's that help you train your mind to focus on the positive things in life...Takes some practice I suppose but eventually you get sort of a light switch in your head that you can turn on when you start getting down and out...Other than that EXCERCISE..EXCERCISE..EXCERCISE....relea ses endorphins which is like the bodies homemade morphine....

If you've got 5 minutes to burn I can think of something else.

You need to know the cause of depression first, and then go from there. Sometimes depression is psychological, other times you just need the right medication. If someone is unwilling to receive help, then let them be. These are people who just seek attention, not help.

exercise, get out of the house and go to a doc and see if you need medicine. Nothing to be ashamed of if you need medicine.

Every situation is different, but this is pretty good advice to start. Depending on the person, it may or may not work. Often people just get into a rut or a slump and need to get out of the funk. Getting them out and just get them going again is the best solution. If this doesn't work, then maybe meds or counselling are the next step.

I'm not a fan of self help books any more than I'm a fan of the latest excercise gizmo. They are about the same, they aren't offering anything that you couldn't do by yourself, and in both cases the book or gizmo will be left unused after a few weeks with no real affect gained.

I'm also not a fan of counselling. I think there's too many piss poor counsellors out there. Often a person can end up worse than they started if a counsellor gets them started in a bad direction. I've never known anyone that's gone through counselling and made any remarkable progress with any kind of problem. But, I've known a few that felt they were just wasting their time at best, or getting bullshit advice at worst.

GL with this case, depression can be a serious problem especially if left untreated.
