What is the difference between lox and smoked salmon? Or is it two names for the same thing?

Well it is the same thing, but generally if you say "Lox", you are talking about the smoked salmon that is called "NOVA", which is not salty, and of a better quality. If you say smoked salmon you are usually getting the salty type..it sucks..Stick with the Nova salmon its primo!

I remember reading once people complaining about lox being salty, but the smoked salmon I eat is never very salty. Maybe what I'm eating is lox that's simply called "smoked salmon."

    From wikianswers:

Nova Lox is smoked salmon. Smoked Salmon is produced by treating the fish with salt and wood smoke. It is just a matter of how much salt and smoke curing time. On the one end of the scale is hard smoked fish like that made by the Indian peoples of the American Northwest. It is heavily salted and smoked until it is cured enough so that it can be stored without refrigeration for some time. The end product is tough, salty and dry. Fish jerky. Nova Lox is the opposite end of the scale. Lightly salted, lightly smoked and very delicate. Ordinary Lox is similar to Nova Lox but much saltier.

Why does it look raw? Can you get worms from eating it?
