Default NCAAB Coach of the Year, who deserves it?

    Keno Davis

Rick Barnes will be up there. I think he has done a great job after losing Durant.

I think Davis should be a slam dunk. Drake wasn't even picked to finish in top half of MVC.

Honorable Mention goes to Matt Painter.

    mofome,

The thing there is though that Tennessee was SUPPOSED to be good. I think you could coach them and they would win just as many games. Davis and Painter got the most out of young and limited talent.

There are many teams that are "supposed" to be good, but never get to No. 1 in the nation. While this honor was short-lived for Tenn, it was still its first-ever appearance there and worthy at least of honorable mention.

Roy Williams, Yea they are talented and were supposed to be good but who recruited the players......Roy Williams.

I'm not sure if i could have gotten them to 28-3 vs. the toughest schedule in the nation, but perhaps. Lofton had no major D-1 offers, though he was good before pearl got there, and Jujaun was a walk on when he joined the team. its not as if hes running around with AAs like duke, unc, kn, ucla.

Ok, I understand the notion of favoring a coach with a smaller program who does well. But that shouldn't be the foremost criteria for this thing. If you're picking Drake because the preseason ranking had them low, then that's saying you believe the job done by the 'experts' with those rankings was spot-on and Davis was able to motivate Drake to overachieve. But at the same time, you can't say that was the case in the preseason then blast the current ranking because, for example, you don't think Duke is now a Top 10 team.

    I second that.

Talent wise, this is one of K's worst teams.

    factually, that's not correct.

    Paulus - 5 star
    Zoubek - 5 star
    Singler - 5 star
    Nelson - 5 star
    Henderson - 5 star
    Scheyer - 4 star
    Thomas - 4 star
smith - 4 star (top 40 recruit nationally)
king - 4 star (top 40 recruit nationally)

yeah, i cant believe he could win with that talent.

Krzyzewski has been at Duke for 27 years, is a Hall of Fame coach and 12-time National Coach of the Year. Of course he's gonna get a lot out his team.

    Willie Bee,

    Bite me!

Ok, take the pre-season rankings and the pollsters out of the discussion entirely, and I still stand by my statements.

Drake has limited talent, yet they may be the most fundamentally sound team in the country and I doubt that any coach coud have gotten any more out of them than Davis did. As for Duke, they have had too many defensive lapses vs. suspect competiton on the road, and with no inside presence they are very vulnberable when they're not hitting their 3s.

Billy Gillispie. No one thought Kentucky was going to be solid this year. They definitely stepped it up 2nd half.

My other choice would be Mike Brey from ND. They were supposed to be pretty good but not this good.

All I'm saying, LT, is if the pollsters are so wrong about Duke, as you say they are, then those preseason rankings might have been just as wrong about Drake. Either way, I'd give it to Bobby Knight every year

ah yes, no one thought Kentucky was going to be solid, yet they were ranked 20th in the AP and 22nd in the Coaches preseason poll and now they're not ranked in either. Thats quite a job. Billy it is.

That's what I get for only paying attention to baskets when tourney time is near. Without looking at pre-season polls I thought Kentucky was supposed to be dog shit without Tubby. Didn't know that them stepping up recently is just them playing like they were supposed to be playing all year.

Seeing this I guess I'll stick with my ND guy and shut up.

well, they fired Tubby, it's not as if he just left the team. Kentucky started off very poorly and therefore a lit of people are mentioning Billy boy for COY, i think its laughable.

I'm not sure how to judge a college hoops coach, I always thought recruiting ability was the most important factor for a college coach, or maybe a coach who set up a good system and was good at finding guys who would be good for that system.

But I'd say Gillespie is looking pretty good, especially if Kentucky upsets and wins the SEC tourney. Isn't "turning around a ship" one of the hallmarks of a good coach? Also, Kentucky lost Patrick Patterson, their top rebounder and second-leading scorer, and didn't seem to miss a beat. They almost beat Tennessee on the road, got a road win and then a home win against Florida. Isn't that a sign of a good program or a good system?

If you start the season ranked, and then end up unranked, i don't see how you can give a guy COY. you can make some arguments that he made some decent moves, but to single him out as the #1 coach in the land seems like a bit of a reach. Hes at Kentucky and sitting on the bubble.
