    here's my list:

    deacon jones,
    reggie white,
    bruce smith,
    joe greene,
    michael strahan

quebb, how can you leave strahan off the list when he is the all-time sack leader, all-time would be deacon if they kept sacks in his early yrs, strahan and deacon jones must be on this list,

randy white does not pass the laugh test

Don't forgot these fellows.this was definitely the best of their era .3 out 4 are in the hall of fame: Jim Marshall
    Alan Page
    Carl Eller
and Gary Larsen may be there one day before it's over.
By the time I got to see these guys play I was 9 years old,and Marshall wasn't far from retiring, and a few years later did ,Page eventually was traded to the Bears where he retired.
Carl Eller was traded to the Seattle Seahawks where he retired after one year.

wrong way jim marshall, i heard he was a legend, best defensive line of all time has to be the fiercesome foursome or whatever they were called, the old rams line with deacon jones, merlin olsen, and the other 2

That's your opinion brother, and the last time I checked you were not the spokesman for the NFL.
If you know anything about football you will know that Strahan,Reggie White,Bruce Smith, and most of the other guys that were named are Def ends.Howie played all 3 def line positions,he also made the pro bowl, and all pro at Def tackle, and Def end.During a game he would play all 3 positions, which meant double and triple teaming. If you think he made the pro bowl at Def tackle weighing 275 lbs.Guys that play that position weigh well over 300 now.Ypo must have not seen him play very much.

i knew about howie long when he was at villanova, and saw him play live 4 times when he was with the los angeles raiders, he played alongside bob golic for many yrs, talk to any nfl historian and they will laugh out loud if you put him in the top 5, that is hilarious

I don't give a damn what any historian would say,Its my opinion, and I believe what I believe.I never played pro foorball, but I did play college (even though it was Div 1 aa),and I know that it is a different game on the inside then it is on the outside. It's a known fact that guys on the inside dont get the glory or the attention that they do on the end.Besides you said Mean Joe Green,I loved the Steelers when I was a kid,but I know he's no top 5,(maybe by reputation)He was surrounded by the best defense ever.I guess you think that Jack Lambert is not in the top 5 of all time inside linebackers.

i agree that the ends get more glory than the tackles, which is mainly becoz ur job as inside guy was and is to clog up the middle and stop the run, free up the defenders next to you and around you, so not glamorous, speaking of which, how bout off lineman who get very little glory at all, and jack lambert would defin be in my top 5 inside lbs of all time, also singletary

Ray Lewis is a linebacker. No way Jason Taylor is on that- Good but not elite.

It is about time someone mention Deacon Jones. The seer is right where did you get Ray Lewis. He might be a top five thug but I don't think he has even ever been on the line at anytime in his career.

in terms of of just putting pure pressure on a QB... this guy might of been the best Charles Haley.

excellent choice, probably top 7 d-lineman of all time but perhaps not top 5, the area of weakness for haley was in stopping the run, and sometimes he took plays off, he was a sick talent rushing the pasher off the edge, no doubt about it, but the top 5 guys have all played the run well enough to keep offenses honest, and have ridic pass rush skills

jack youngblood was mentioned, he might be a top 5er,

i stick with my original 5 guys

    reggie white,
    bruce smith,
deacon jones (would be the all time sack leader if sacks had been kept since his first game in the league, they did not start keeping sacks until like '75, i think)
    mean joe greene,
    michael strahan,

at 6 and 7, i'll go with jack youngblood and charles haley,

if merlin olsen had not played next to deacon all his career, he would get more acclaim and would be more recognized, he was a great, great football player

top 5 lbers of all time, a tough one, for my money:

    jack lambert
    jack ham
    mike singletary
    ray lewis
derrick thomas, the late and great speed rusher, he was so talented it is scary
