OT--Considering Purchasing an iPod
I’m a total newbie to this. I’d heard the term “iPod” but literally had no more than a vague idea what it even was until I had a conversation about it with a friend a few days ago who recently got one. (Figured it was probably a phone, or a video game. Or a video game where you make believe you’re on the phone.)
But it sounds like something I might be interested in. Right now I’m trying to figure out which iPod (or alternative brand product for that matter, if there is such a thing) best suits my preferences.
Ideally, here’s what I’d like:
1. Something that will hold my CD collection. (Currently I have about 350 CDs, and no doubt will gradually increase that over time.) No need for video or anything else, just something I can use to listen to my CDs.
2. Something I can use in my car. So, for instance, if I were taking a long road trip, I could have my entire CD collection with me without having to haul around the CDs themselves.
3. Prefer higher audio quality, though I’m not a fanatic about it to where I must have something that is technically higher quality but it’s a difference that only .00001% of the population can even discern. So whatever format would sound best with an average to above average car stereo, even if it takes up more space.
4. Something that has a lot of flexibility in how the songs are organized. So it’s easy to find a specific song and play it, it’s easy to find a whole CD and play it, songs can be organized by genre, it can play random songs from a CD, from an artist, from a genre (or other grouping one has created), or from the entire collection, etc.
I have a Sony Vaio computer, Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R5002, Samsung CD-ROM SC-140C, running Windows XP, plenty of hard drive space (including multiple available external hard drives), and GoldWave audio editing program to upload CDs to the computer (though I take it one has to use some special software to do so with an iPod).
So given that, what would be the ideal version and size for my purposes? And what, besides the unit itself, would I also have to purchase to do what I want to do?
Thanks.

I have an iPod nano and love it.
I'd recommend getting the 8GB Nano for your needs, iTunes will do everything you wish, you can organize all your stuff as you like, create tons of playlists, synchronize whatever you like to your iPod. Don't get a hard drive based iPod if you plan on exercising with it, the flash memory (nanos) are more durable for those purposes.

I got my daughter an 80 gig Ipod classic for christmas. Best purchase ever. I"ve used it a few times and while I don't care for her tastes in music it's great.
