Default How do you handicap?

Hey everyone...

Just wondering how handicappers come up with there numbers...Like from a sportsbook point of view or an indivuals because I see people on here that say "these numbers look right" or "that ML is off by x amount"...How do you come up with these numbers?

Thanx in advance...

I have seen this question posted several times before and not very many answers followed.

I don't have a set system for comming up with what I think the line should be.

I use SBR Matchup Reports to study past games by the teams that are playing. I look at every number on the page. Take into consideration, fg, ft, 3 pt%, and ppg and points against.

I actually handicap in reverse. I am sure ppl will disagree but it works for me. I take vegas' lines and study games based on that. After looking at stats, injuries, trends, etc., I always look at previous meetings.

I will take the team ppg and subtract it from the ammt of pts their opponent is giving up. Then I will do the same for the other team.

More times than not, this doesn't cause me to make a play or pass, but it may contribute to my confidence in that particular game.

I am sure there are much better ways but it works for me.

Nothing takes the place of watching teams play, having a feel for certain teams, and picking the right times to bet on or against these teams. Keeping up with the teams are crutial for success.

I don't mean just looking at past scores either. Try to watch as many games as possible or at least pick a few teams and follow them closer than their fans do.

GL and maybe some solid cappers can help me out and give you some other methods!

I look at the game/matchups/trends/tendencies/streak and come up with my own numbers.

I only wager on the games that are at least few points off my own numbers.

For example...

I capped UMASS at -6.5. I opened my book tonight and saw them at -3. Jumped all over that bad boy.

The pro bettors I know would rather forfeit their social security numbers and extended family members, before they'd even consider giving up their handicapping secrets.

Anybody with a system for handicapping takes themselves way too seriously. Nobody has an edge, your best bet is playing better than -110 or taking home dogs.

I personally disagree, but I'm not one to share strategy - so I guess it's a dead argument. Believe what you want to believe.

I like to go with a system. Without boring everyone to death with all the details, I first look at the statistical matchups of a game and then any angles or trends that may be relevant. If what I come up with is different from the official line, then as long as that team is healthy, that's my pick.
