Exclamation Need Opinions for Website Name

Hey Everyone.. It's been awhile since I posted in here but I've been really busy... I thought I would get your opinion on a sports site I have been working on... I am toying with the idea of naming it AgonsArmy.com

Agon = The Greek God of Contests/Rivalry

Army = The network of people on my site working together to achieve one goal (Winning Contests).

Any thoughts would be appreciated... Like or Dislike and why?

    Thanks Guys!

Will your site host contests? Are you trying to do it to make money or just fun?

Thanks Domestic.. OmgUrMom, I am doing it for fun starting out.. I work full time and really just want to start something to hopefully build with time... Not looking for it to be an overnight success.. I will definitely let you all know though when I get it up and running!

have you checked how much that will cost yet? It's fairly short and somewhat catchy so I like it. Also the fact it has some added meaning behind it is a nice bonus.

Yeah I have all of the details laid out.. You dont think it sounds too much like a video game do you? Or a demonic cult? Lol

A great name you came up with...............how about Agonsconquest.com or Agonschallenge.com just food for thought

HoldEm, Those both sound good as well... The others I had in mind were AgonsAntics (Don't want it to look like im tricking people though) and AgonsAlliance... (Maybe too long?) Good suggestion though..

You may want to check to see if anyone has it as a domain name...

Not catchy enough. I would think you want to appeal to sports bettors not history buffs. Sounds to similar to agony.

Excel, The word agony actually derived from Agon.. I see what you're saying though.. I'm wondering though.. Does the name make you? Or do YOU make the name?

I think its a cool name, but like OmgUrMom says, it does make me think of gaming and MMORPGs..

Then again, I think the final piece to the puzzle is what exactly you want to do with the site.. I.e. if its going to have anything related to contests and challenges (conquests) AgonsArmy does sound good and appropriate.. In a gladiator type of way almost

(But in any case, like you said, "Does the name make you? Or do YOU make the name?"...)

AgonsArmy would lend well to interesting graphics as well, both for site, banners and merchandize

Whatever you do, you should probably get the URL soon so its not snapped up by someone else..

Correct if the site has excellent content, advertising or even something unique the name doesn't matter much. Just look at google or godaddy.

Thanks Ladies and Gentleman! I was also toying with the idea of naming it "DimeBacks.com"

Does that even make sense though?

I would be very interested in joining a demonic cult.

It's funny JR, when I initially read the title to your thread asking if we liked the name, I was certain you'd be getting a majority of people hating it no matter what you named it. It sometimes comes with the territory not only online but particularly when you have a congregation of disgruntled gamblers. I was pleasantly surprised to see the positive reviews. But here's the irony, I don't like it. And I don't say this to be the black cloud, it's strictly my opinion. If you like it, you should stick with it. But here's why.

First off, I don't know what kind of sport site you're building whether it caters to fans, gamblers or some other sub group. That aside, I appreciate the thought you put into it using the Greek word as the derivation for your name. It's clever and I certainly applaud that. However, the name Agonsarmy has too many vowels and is not easily remembered. Agon even sounds like something I've heard which is Argon (checmical element) and it doesn't have any meaning to the average person, therefore will not be easily recalled. I can envision people trying to steer their friends to your site and saying Argonsarmy or not being able to remember anything but the word army and that the first part starts with an A. Just my 2 cents. Most of the times when I read all positives and one negative i think the guy is trying to be contrarian just for the sake of standing out. I assure you, I'm not that guy.

SJ, Trust me I appreciate everyone's honest opinion.. It means alot to have people tell you the truth.. I agree with you on that.. The letters run together real bad and it just looks weird if people dont know what it means..

What do you think of DimeBacks?

I appreciate you taking my criticism in the way it was intended, constructively. Dimebacks is much better in my opinion. Although if I knew what you plan for your site it would allow me to ascertain whether this name is congruent to the theme of your site and that is of course, almost as important as the recognizability of the name itself. Almost as important but the clarity of the name is paramount.

Definitely... It's going to be a site that is dedicated to nothing more than weekly sports contests starting out.. Whoever has the highest winning percentage at the end of the week will win cash/prizes... I will be keeping up with everyones picks and all.. It will also have a chat and forum to offer the opportunity for people to discuss games and matchups before betting on them, similar to what is done here i suppose, just not as "good"

Well, when you get this started, count me in, it sounds like an excellent concept particularly if you focus on the contests and don't try and be another forum. Lord knows there are already too many. I just looked up a few that are available and although this isn't clever, it is direct. Sportscontests.com is not available but thesportscontests.com is and also sportscontestsite.com . Just food for thought.

Man that would be awesome if sportscontests.com was available. I will keep you informed for sure. I want to do all I can to make it fun but also something people don't have to spend all day doing. I'm aiming to make it as userfriendly as possible

What do you guys think of TheRiskyBiz.com?

"AgonsArmy" sounds like a bit militaristic and prolly turn people away
Imo you shouldn't avoid putting 'sport' in the name
