LVBOUND, you seem like a good guy and I know there are good cops. My cousin is a local cop, he was raised with strict morals, I'd be really surprised if he didn't follow the book while on the job. Mind you if he were to stop me for something minor like speeding, doubt he'd ticket me because even though we haven't talked since we were kids, our mothers are sisters and it wouldn't sit well if I told my mother about the ticket and she told her sister.

Problem I have with cops is being hassled for no reason. It's happened several times, the worst was a very tense situation with two cops about 12 years ago. Mistaken identity. I was in an area resting after having gone on a long bike ride. Approached by two cops who were aggressively barking orders. I didn't know what the hell was going on and tried to find out by asking questions, which they wouldn't answer. They told me to empty my pockets. I put one hand in my pocket and kept it there, again trying to take control of the situation by demanding to know what this was all about. They start screaming conflicting orders, one being "get your hand out of your pocket!". One also drew his gun and had it pointed at me. While this was happening, the guy they were looking for drove by on a bicycle. One of the cops said "it's him!", and the other cop said to me "you're ok". That's it, they left. No apology, just "you're ok", as in "you can leave now". I looked nothing like the suspect, the bikes looked nothing alike. I just happened to be a guy with a bicycle in an area where they were looking for someone on a bicycle. I was no saint when I was younger, had runins with the law, but getting hassled when you're minding your own business is uncalled for. Too many cops are on a power trip.

What the police should do is have 2 different types of police: 1 type just for traffic infractions and the other type for robberies, real crime etc that way the second type wouldnt have a monthly quota of tickets to issue and therefore the more important cop's rep would be better with the public, as in a general defender of the public.

Always keep your dogs leashed. If I had my dog on a leash and someone else's dog was unleashed and started fighting with my leashed dog I would have shot the owner of the dog first.

What you would have done if your unleashed dog, who is well behaved and mannered, gets attacked by another unleashed dog, who is mean and unmannered at an unleashed designed dog park? I'm for unleashed dog parks but if you have a mean biting dog that likes to attack friendly nice dogs you shouldn't be taking him there.

So if you were at the playground with your child and some hyperactive kid runs up and starts play wrestling with your kid this means that you are justified to shoot the hyperactive kid in the head?

I could understand if the dog violently latched on to the dogs throat, but witnesses stated that it was non-violent and there was no blood or yelping (until some prick pulled out a gun of course)

I wouldn't allow any unleashed dog to touch my dog. What if he has rabies? And if you spend 2 years trying to train your dog to be obedient with commands you don't want him to behave like an unleashed dog. If I see an unleashed dog approaching my leashed dog I grab a 2x4 and let him take his chances.

Well Pavy I hate door to door sales reps coming to my house but unfortunately there are laws in this country that all of us including police officers are obligated to abide by or pay the consequences for if not. If you see someone in your driveway robbing your car and you shoot him in his back as he is running away, you go to jail for manslaughter because you can not shoot a defenseless unarmed man in the back (and cops can not either).

What I find even more disturbing is that this is a public park with innocent bystanders around and this officer is recklessly firing a handgun at a dog because it is rough housing with his dog. This idiot could have accidentally shot an innocent child or woman over petty stupid shit.

This guy is an arrogant idiot and does not have the required mentality to enforce the law and have the power that he has and without a doubt should not be permitted to carry a concealed weapon.

Stunned dog owners and residents of a Severn neighborhood are shocked that authorities won't be charging a federal police officer who shot and killed a Siberian husky Monday night at a community dog park.

Bear-Bear, a brown and white husky that was about 3 years old, was playing in the Quail Run dog park at about 6:30 p.m., running off leash inside the fenced-in area, when the officer and his wife arrived with a German shepherd, who was kept on a leash. When the dogs began to play roughly, the federal officer asked Bear-Bear's guardian, his owner's brother, to call off the dog. But before he could do anything, the officer pulled out a gun and shot Bear-Bear, according to the husky's owner.

Bear-Bear, who belongs to Rachel Rettaliata, died of his injuries a few hours later. County police did not name the federal officer.

"I've been bawling my eyes out since 7 p.m. last night," Rettaliata said. "It's grief mixed with anger. We're so angry this guy was able to take our animal for what we feel was no reason at all.


"We still don't believe that he's gone. We just want so badly to be diligent about this. [The officer] has to pay some sort of consequence for his foolishness."

A spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department said no charges will be filed and investigators found no evidence of criminal activity.

Rettaliata adopted Bear-Bear about two years ago from a husky rescue. He'd been seized from a Delaware home where people had tied him up outside, largely leaving him to fend for himself in the elements.

Tiffany Greco, who fostered the young Bear-Bear and placed him with the Rettaliata family, said the husky had led a hard-knock life, starved and neglected, with mats in his long fur the size of softballs. But even though he was mistreated, she said he never became aggressive around people or dogs.

"He was a very lovey-dovey, happy-go-lucky guy," Greco said, adding that Bear-Bear at least had a taste of a good life with the Rettaliatas. "All this dog wanted to do was curl up on top of you."

She said that huskies have a rough way of playing that, to people who don't know them, can seem intimidating.

"They have a much different play style than other dogs," she said. "They're a rough-and-tumble breed. They're mouthy. Often people interpret that as being aggressive when it's really them just playing.

"In the Quail Run community of townhomes, a number of residents have dogs that they walk to the community dog park. Neighbors say the park is generally an easygoing place where well-mannered dogs play with one another.

Bear-Bear was a regular there.

Tarnna Hernandez saw Bear-Bear all the time. She lives two doors down from the Rettaliatas and Bear-Bear plays with her children and Marshmallow, her year-and-a-half-old Dalmatian/Australian shepherd mix.

"I've never personally seen him be aggressive toward any dog or human or anything, for that matter," Hernandez said. "My two very young children love Bear-Bear and would attack him every time they saw him with hugs and love."

She can't believe Bear-Bear would ever do anything to deserve being shot.


"I have not seen that dog hurt anyone. Or snarl. He's never even barked," she said. "His only way was to get out a gun out and shoot him? Uh-uh. It's completely unbelievable."

Dorothy Pearce, the homeowner's association manager, was appalled that someone would fire a gun in the community dog park — at dinnertime.

"This is tragic," she said. "A community of homeowners with children playing around should not have gun-crazy, off-duty policemen shooting in their area, especially a dog in a controllable situation."

Rettaliata said that after the officer shot Bear-Bear, the dog didn't yelp or cry, just lay down in the grass, bleeding heavily. "He just went and laid down," she said. "I just can't get over it and I don't think it's being taken seriously because it was an animal involved."

Carolyn Kilborn, chairwoman of the organization Maryland Votes for Animals, based in nearby Annapolis, thought the authorities should be investigating the case thoroughly.

"The killing of the dog in Severn is a sad situation that should be investigated carefully to determine if the incident was caused by a dangerous dog or a dangerous person," she said.

Notice that the dog that was shot and killed was a usual at the park and was friendly and loving to everybody, and than you have the new bad ass military guy who shows up in the park and suddenly this friendly well known dog is dead.

Sorry but I gotta side with this well known friendly local dog being innocent and the new guy from outta town with a gun being the dangerous one here.
