Default Fell Off The Wagon

Hey all--this is awful I know, so please save the lectures. I have been able to keep my gambling to very very rare (a few times per year) and very small 10$ bets on those times. However, my wife was out of town this weekend, and I had a lot going on, and i fell of the wagon--$1000 worth. Part of me really wants to try disputing the charges. I didnt even think about it until the bank called me today and i said i would look into it.

They have a credit card authorization form that i signed that said I could be a target of 3rd party collections. They also have copies of my ID and debit card.

I know the advice is take it like a man and pay--but i am a good person who really messed up. Is there anything they can do to me because they have that form, or is it all scare tactics? Please help, and don't judge me. I put myself in an awful mess.

If you really are a good person, you'd not try to screw a book over because you made a mistake in playing above your means. You can't not own up to your responsibility, and then by the same token say you're a good person and it was just a mistake. Good people, which I'm sure you are, we all make mistakes, do not go and run from our debts.

Welcome to the forum and I urge you to reconsider.

I'm sorry, sir, but I think you'll be hard-pressed to find advice on how to help screw a book over because you took a shot and lost. Then again, not everyone pays their due around here so you just may have a shot.

Reconsider Harold.

i know--but like online blackjack is really honest on their part! Ive never done anything like this, i've always paid, and would have said the same thing to someone else 2 days ago. I already feel like a bad person for having done what i just did again after all these years in the first place. kinda hard to feel much worse to be honest with you.

One question; What does your wife look like?

Maybe she needs a real man.

Harold I'm not trying to pick on you, I'm just trying to speak bluntly so maybe it connects to you, I understand you made a mistake and you're unsure of how the wife will react. Believe me, I'm not a cold-hearted guy, but this is just one of those things you have to own up to in life. No part of you will feel better, at least I'd hope not, by running from this.

Maybe he charged it on his wife's credit card.

I did the same thing with Sportsbook.com a couple of years ago. She asked me if a bought a couple of thousand worth of merchandise from department stores in South Korea. They were billed as High Pay/Lo Pay. I came clean. It is still a sore situation and it happened in 2003.

1st tell your wife the truth.

She will be upset, but moreso, happy that you told her.

You will pay the 1000 easily.

Thanks man. When we met over 6 years ago I was just getting myself out of it after 2 terrible years. Except for a couple very small bumps in the road, things have been great over that time with my gambling--but i know it is her biggest fear and something she will always worry about--and obviously today that is justified.

whether you dispute the charges or not, she'll know about it. that really has nothing to do with your situation. charges will be on statement, even if credits follow or they issue a new card because you claim fraud, etc.

if you truly want to quit gambling then don't dispute the charges, if you dispute the charges you wont learn from this and you will do the same thing again

don't beat yourself up. gambling is a strong illness. you blew $1,000 dude, not $10,000....just relax. right now you are very emotional after your losses, give yourself some time to calm down and properly assess the situation with a clear head.

harold,

i speak from the heart because i have been in this exact situation. the worst thing i did was hide it from her. i thought i could get away with it and when i got away with it once, i felt invincible and kept doing it. needless to say it caught up to me and when she found out it was hell. i swore to her it wouldnt happen again. after a while my temptations got the best of me and i slipped. but this time, instead of hiding it and making excuses, i told her immediately. although she was very hurt, she was very happy i told her. she felt she could trust me again.

Exactly. I don't know your financial situation, but it sounds like you gambling again in this manner will upset her more than the actual amount, it's not like she'll feel better if you're awarded the $ back.

You're going to have to kiss some ass one way or the other, so just be a man and move forward. You coming here shows that you have a conscience, now just own up to it with the wife and forget trying to screw the book.

Thanks Remmy. Money has just been kind of a sore spot recently. We aren't going to be able to go on a trip we had hoped to be able to save for, and a we got denied for a consolidation loan with our mortgage company. Not a good time for the wife to start losing faith in me.

No bank will call on Sunday. If the bank actualy called on Sunday it was most likely a machine. Books do not ask for credit card copy and ID unless you want to cash out which you won't. Harold, you are a bad story teller.

Thanks for the support Michael...i'm just really disappointed in myself. I can give a million excuses about how it all boiled to where it did, but the bottom line is I messed up--and being blacklisted from online betting wouldnt be the worst thing in the world--i just dont know if it will hurt me more than help me.

Yes, it is pathetic and awful of me to think about. 100% agree. I think everyone in here, however, has done something in their life that they were not proud of. I need to know if this is my time to be awful, will it just hurt me worse.
