Default Anyone ever eat the 72 ounce steak&trimmings in 1 hour in Amarillo,TX getting it free

I used to see the billboards for The Big Tex??steakhouse in Amarillo,Texas advertised on my way from Minnesota to Laughlin,Nevada telling about the world famous free 72 ounce steak and all the trimmings being free if you eat it an hour. That means they leave fat and grissle on it where you have to eat that too.I guess they put your name on the wall of fame if you do it and they had a write up in my paper how a local nun accomplished the feat recently.

I was just wondering if anyone here ever ate the steak in less than a hour and got it free?Or did anyone attempt it where they couldn't finish and paid a fortune for it probably? What's the place like,is it a dive? They probably have a guy in the back room that's a professional farter that sits next to you to spoil your appetite.hehe!

Gas costs too much these days so I never drive to Laughlin anymore in the winter but by cutting across Kansas off the freeway on the 2 lane and missing Amarillo meant saving allot of bucks but missing out on ever going to that place to eat the steak.Darn!I know I could do it.

    I don't think I could eat 1/2 of it.

I always traveled from East to West for 2,000+ miles on I-40, and can remember seeing signs for hours on end about that place from the moment you passed OK City. Saw a special on it once, and the "insider's tip" was that you only got one glass of water for the whole meal, and many a passerby got hung by not being able to eat the bread they'd saved for the end. The tip was to soak the bread and eat it first for some sort of digestive reasons they gave. Giving it a whirl sometime is definitely on my to do list.

I wonder if there are any locals that routinely can do it, and if they get cut off quicker than a player on a winning streak at 5dimes?

Texas is nothing to brag about, ran a pizza joint down there about 5 years ago outside of Dallas and was shit. The people did not support it, hicks down their do not know what good food is. I made a great pie too. The people of Texas eat burgers and dogs only.

I live in Texas JJ and I will eat any great pizza put in front of me,

but they try this gag every once in a while at certain times of the year, there was a place called hoffbrau that did the 72 ounce thing and if you did not eat it you had to pay like 50 or 60 buck for a sub average cut of meat....I never tried it but I did watch one guy try it and not even close....

I do my best to stay out of the Panhandle, especially Lubbock. Only times I've stopped in Amarillo over the last 20 years or so have been to pee and stretch my legs.

As the famous steak’s reputation grew, so did the price. The meal was originally priced at $9.95. By the mid 1990s the price had climbed to $39.50. The popularity of the Texas beef drove the price of the meal to $50.00 just before the millennium. Last year higher market prices for cattle pushed the price to $72.00. If you come in to test your gastronomic skills, don’t be offended if they ask for a payment on the meal before you begin eating. It’s been our experience that – win or lose – everybody who tackles the FREE 72-oz. Steak dinner has trouble reaching in their hip pocket for a wallet after they push back from the table. We happily refund the money to the winners. We also give them a T-shirt, a souvenir boot mug and a certificate. They can add their comments to the winners on the “Wall of Fame” next to the lobby display, and then we’ll add their photo to the gallery of recent winners. Their names go into the permanent list of Champions.

I can't believe no one in this thread has made the obligatory "Old '76er" joke from "The Great Outdoors."
