Default Do You Agree With The Following Statement....

Heard the following statement made at a McCain rally on Fox News while I was working out, and don't know what to make of it. A man said "If the whole world hates the United States now, that just means we're doing something right." All the commentators were in unison that this was a tremendous statement. I won't give my two cents in order to remain objective, but would be curious if you agree with it.

The whole world hating the US means that we're just doing something right...agree or disagree?

The whole world doesn't hate the U.S. Just most of the world. Actually they hate our government, and they think we are collectively stupid.

Disagree, it doesn't take rocket scientists to figure out when a country is being ran poorly and into the ground by its leaders. If the whole world agrees, I don't take that as a compliment, then again most Americans have always been fairly limited in terms of brain capacity. "We're Americans, the greatest country ever, but I've never stepped foot INTO another country! Goooo America!".

We worry to much what the rest of world thinks of us. I find it funny, that people who care what the world thinks of the USA, would be the 1st ones to say "I dont give a crap what so and so thinks about me", JMO.

And you accused me of making a racist statement in a thread last week? So if I said, that black monkey that is running for President of the USA is retarded , you would be okay with that?

Much of the 'hate' the international community has for us is borne from the same ignorance that produces the arrogance some Americans display.

No, the statement that we're doing something right if everyone hates us doesn't hold much water with me. I'm not saying we're doing everything wrong or necessarily bringing all of the hatred upon ourselves. But pissing everyone off, seemingly going out of our way to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world, that certainly isn't the right way to do business either. I trace it back to Dubya's, "You're either fer us or a'gin us" comment in his 2002 SOTU address. I think that was indeed how a lot of Americans felt, but it's not the right message to broadcast.

    That's 19th century thinking.

The world is too small and connected for that approach now.

No, saying things like what McCain said is exactly why the rest of the world hates the US, and it's wrong, not right.

I don't care at all what the rest of the world thinks about the US, I think the US Republican political machine is evil because of what I have seen and see.

Once in a while someone or something is hated for doing something right, but the overwhelming majority of the time someone or something is hated, it's for doing something wrong.

And furthermore, historically, when someone has been hated for doing something right, it's almost always the equivalent of today's Republican hypocrisy/Fox News people doing the hating.

Considering most of the world is made up of countries who are still considered third world or second rate, I am ok with that. Let something happen to them and who are they gonna go running and crying to?

If McCain declared that he drinks his own urine, FOX would applaud him. That's FOX for ya.

The more I listen to McCain, he sounds like another GWB.

The red states elected GWB. I expect them to elect McC.

Nina I'm thinking of making a rather large Idol play that was passed on to me. What is the site you run for Idol? Also, do you discuss odds to win and if certain contestants have the potential to get old on audiencies over there? Cheers...

Most of the nationals of other countries that visit here, or otherwise come into contact with a lot of Americans abroad, actually like us (as polls and surveys have shown).

They consider us a super-friendly and helpful people, in general.

And our generous responses to appeals for charitable help wolrdwide bears that out. American movies are also very big overseas, ditto pop music, and the like.

But they often (and esp. last 7 years) eitehr hate or are contemptuous of our government.

But then, so are most Americans.

Thanks, Willie. It is refreshing to see that someone agrees with me on this topic. I would like to add that at least people in the international community have a better excuse for their ignorance than people who are being controlled by the government of which they know very little.

To take it further, I am OK with the majority of the people hating the things its own government is doing as long as that majority consists of the ignorant, mindless population. That is the best reason for representative democracy that I can think of.

The whole world didn't started to hate the US now, it's been a thing of decades; for intervening in foreign affairs in public or covert, to their country or neighbors. The 'hate' is in marjority to the US govertment not its people. Most Americans get treated very well in almost all countries, even in those third world or second rate countries as the elegant lady above put it.

Such a comment can only come out of someone who hasn't left their back yard and has no clue of the situation 'out there'.

For a message board where we have to break down and analyze things to get ahead by finding angles - by math or information - and picking apart things just to try and make a buck betting... It's shocking to see so many taking the media 'talk points' and the words of the President at face value. It's shocking. Sad, really. We question lines. We question motivational edges. Yet I hear the same drivel out of our President's mouth...

I live in Vegas. I can see where Nelis Air Force Base is if I stand on the roof of my house. Now - Imagine that Air Force Base was not the US's - it was say - I don't know, Saudi Arabia's. Imagine what that is like. Seeing Saudis flying around your hood. If that doesn't make you want to strap on some explosives and make you want to go over there and make some bad things happen - I don't know what would.

They hate us for our freedom? Our lifestyle? Maybe fundamentally - Keeping women and free speech down is popular in too large a portion of the world right now. But to incite violence? Occupation. They hate us because we occupy these sovereign nations and make up some b.s. to get away with it. I know if we were 'occupied' by fighter jets and armed forces, It would incite violence in me. If you understand that, then you understand why 9/11 happened and why our troops are dying in Iraq.

Furthermore, if you asked the leadership of those that mean us harm - that's what they'll tell you. In fact - they have told us. Just like when a reporter asks Pedro Martinez after a game : "did you mean to hit the guy with that pitch"? Pedro says: "Yeah I meant to hit the guy".

The only counter argument to occupation is 'we do it to protect oil'. Yeah, that's going great - it's 2x as much as it was a few years ago at the pump. Maybe they hate the US because the US is so smart! It's sad when ignorance creates arrogance to protect the ignorance, as noted earlier in this thread.

I understand what you're saying, McBa1n. But you might pick a better example than Saudi Arabia. If their citizens don't want us there, then they need to press their leaders to tell the USA they no longer want to be part of the agreement the Saudi Arabian royalty signed with the USA back in 1948.

When you don't have elections or parliament and the country is ruled by a king and its family the citizens have as much power as the goats they hurd.

Well I'm certainly glad that our forefathers didn't just accept defeat and shrug things off as if there was nothing that could be done about life here some 230-odd years ago.
