The talent is being able to predict future events. However you do that. I know women gamblers who use intuition, they don't know anything about stats and don't care. you can have all the math skills in the world but there is an intangible when it comes to using math to predict future events. You have to decide what variables are important. I don't think that is a skill which can be learned, I think a person is born with that ability.

Can someone just study the math and then build predictive models that work without having this inherent talent to pick the correct variables? I don't think so.

i think everyone with an interest in sports gambling has "it" to further develop it takes years of experience and often thousands and thousands of dollars in losses to garner an understanding of what it takes to win. long before the message boards appeared only the truly gifted won enough to make it worth while, unless you were on the book side of the house. with the advent of the web and the vast array of information it presents most people now have resources at their fingertips to make some headway, the biggest problem i see is a lack of self-confidence and an inabilty to sift thru bull shit information. the truely important facts are often mixed in the rest of the heap and you've got to pick out fact from fiction.

last night in the usf & s. deigo game the 1st half ended with 45 total points, second half total was 65.5 yet i "trust" the line on the total was set at a decent number, therefore i played the over and went to bed. linesmen are smart, it's there job to get numbers close! i think they scored 90 in the second half so i got an easy winner just because i trusted those that make the number, at this time of year games come in close to the number and you could use this to your advantage. i didn't cap the total i just relied on those that did to be close, it worked out. a shortcut i take as a lazy capper!!!

agreed, but my personal feeling is they'll be close to the number and in effect you have a big middle if you can be patient enough to wait for some half-times.......just one of the things i do on occasion...
