Default Death, a question for the older forumites

at 37, i find myself often in concern about my own mortality

My question is, as you get older, does nature prepare you for death ? in the blink of an eye, i will be 47,57 67, then dead at some stage

so how come old people dont worry about it so much? is it nature?

    Why worry?

Just live day in day out ... dont forget about those that are always with you (family) and u should do OK !!

If you pass away ... they will be the only ones to remember you anyway ... so put time in them

ok so taking for granted that in about 50 odd years you will be dead

do you think that the human brain prepares us for dead?

even better if old people can help?

IMO the ones who worry about dying , probably have something wrong with them, cancer, etc. Healthy older people dont even consider themselves old.

I made a comment to a guy who is 82 about him being old (no disrespect was intended), and I thought the guy was gonna come over the counter and smack me upside the head. At 82 he doesnt consider himself old, so its seems like its all a matter of how you feel about yourself.

You dont prepare for this ... u accept it.

Many are fortunate to say goodbye to there loved ones ... others die instantly ... how can u prepare for that?

Once you live ur life to the fullest ... if you die tomorrow .. u will not regret anything

Jamie, though I'm sure you don't want to hear it from me, all I can tell you is that from my research and my own experiences as a middle-aged guy now, at some point all of us contemplate dying and growing older and at some point all of us think about dying and never living...but if we do die tomorrow, we're ready and the only thing we regret is not being alive any longer.

Quit worrying Jamie, it doesnt do any good. Take sharks advice and live for the time your here. You must have kids if your worried about seeing your grandkids, so enjoy the family you have and it will all work itself out in the end.

Jamie I don't care how tough people act, EVERYONE is scared when they're certain it's their time. I knew a guy who was one of the more ruthless people out there, and when the reality sunk in minutes before his death even he was scared shitless. It's a fact of life, but when you KNOW that the world is just about to continue on without you it's scary. GL...

I always try to think of Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove when I get ideas about gruesome deaths, how he made torture sound so matter-of-fact. Then I think of something else.

Best quote ever about it is from another movie, Shawshank Redemption: Get busy living or get busy dying.

Your right if they are certain they are going to die, ive seen grown men cry on their death beds. Best advice I can give anyone is to make your peace with God, Budda,or whatever you believe in now dont wait till your dying cause then its to late.

My plan is to drink as much as is humanly possible.

That way I don't stand much chance of being elderly , or needing others

    Jamie,
My family owns a funeral home and I work there full time. Every day I am meeting families who have lost loved ones. It is my job to "take care of the dead and their survivors". By this I mean, care for the deceased as if they are precious and as I would if it were my mother, father, child or whatever the situation might be. As for their survivors, we try to lessen the burden. It is really easy when someone dies from natural causes at 80. But it is difficult when somebody loses a child. It is hard for anybody to understand including myself. I try not to focus on death too much but just to focus on each day and make the most of it.

To get to your question, I am only 26. But, I think about dying alot. I try not to worry about it because I am a Christian. As christians, we are promised a much better life in heaven than here on earth. Don't get me wrong, I am scared to die. I hope I live to be 200 yrs old.

I get the feeling from talking to alot of older folks that they are prepared to die. I think you are correct that as we live we grow to accept this as a part of life. I think sitting thru 100's of funerals the messages have helped me to understand that part of God's plan is for us not to know. I can't imagine knowing that I was healthy but only had 2 weeks or whatever to live. Even knowing I had 30 years left would be wierd. The first 25 would be "normal" but the last 5 would be strange, but would probably be spent more appreciative for life.

I'm 34, but I've thought about death as much as anyone.

I'm actually excited about death. I'm curious what's on the other side. I mean, it's kinda scary, not knowing, but it's also the ultimate curiosity because nobody knows. When my time comes, it comes, and there's not much anyone can do about it barring suicide, so it's pointless to think about it because there isn't much that can be done about it.

Scarier is life itself. Death seems simpler, cleaner, easier. Life is complicated and difficult.

Obviously, things like torture, pain, struggle, etc have a certain connotation to living things. But these are mortal concerns. In the big picture, these concepts are probably trivial.
