Talking How many visitors does SBR get?

I had noticed on the home page you now show the number of visitors to the site. Until a week or so, it appereared like you weere getting around 500 a day according to the counter.

On this past Thursday, I noticed a big bump in the number to over 54,000.

I just looked today, and two days later the counter shows over 800k.

Damn this place is growing fast.

The counter was initially adding up Visitors using the reader's IP address. That meant that if you had visited the site every day you would only be counted once in a year. It has been changed to Views. If you visit the site every day of the week you would be counted 7 times.

According to your post Bill, that would mean that you have had over 750k 'viewer sessions' to SBR in the past two days alone.

    Rock On!!!

SBR does have a lot of visitors but Dave set up the counter. Nuff said.

there is a huge difference between visitors and views. SBR gets just under 3000 visitors a day and about 35,000 page views a day.

I think you and Bill need to get on the same page.

Are you now claiming the number on the home page is page views to the site? Bill is claiming that is not the case.

Why did you change it from 'Number of Visitors?

One more for you Dave: How the big jump from 54k to 805k in two days?

You may need to reread my post.

    Bill,

Using your math, that would mean there have been 375k visitor sessions each of the past two days to add up to 750k views in the past two days.

How else would you explain the jump from 54k views to 806k views in just two days?

I really have no idea when it was switched and what the numbers said before I looked at it today. I'll have to let the pros break that down.

Basic math tells me 807,500 divided by 28 days is 28,839. 28,839 divided by 3,000 visitors a day = almost 10 views per person. I'm guessing the overall number should be in line with what hitwise and those tracking sites say.

I was wondering Why SBR only has 20,000 visitors for the year last week, this explains it. Now the views will truely reflect the right number. Good idea.

I think it is easy to understand but maybe it is not. For the month of January we were only SHOWING unique visits, now we are SHOWING all page views.

Our database collects every visit to every page, so instead of displaying the number that shows unique visitors I am now showing the number of views.

As Neil Young sang "There is more to the picture than meets the eye...hey hey, my my". BTW, thats a kick ass song. Anyway stats lie. I would rather have 10 quality vistors who find the site useful than 3,000,000 page views. We do sell advertising but its results orientated and never ever based on impressions.

    Dave,

Up until about the 25th of the month, you were showing what you claim to be unique viewers to the site. Then I noticed this past Thursday there was a big jump, to which Bill claimed were the number of 'viewer sessions'. Then a couple of days later, the counter was changed to show 'page views' as you now claim. While many sites have counters to show traffic and viewers to their site, I dont ever recall one that showed the number of page views, but there is always a first time.

Dave gets paid per visitor. It shows whatever he needs to get a raise.

    No Better,

We at SBR appreciate your keen interest in the traffic to our sites. As I’m sure most people reading this thread would now understand, we have made several changes this month to the counter shown at the top of SportsbookReview.com.

In summary, as has been previously stated several times in this thread, the counter initially reflected unique visitors, to date, for 2006. We then decided to change the counter to reflect “page views” (aka “impressions”) for all pages on the SBR network, including SBR Odds (http://lines.sportsbookreview.com) and SBR Forum (http://forum.sportsbookreview.com).

Counters on sites throughout the World Wide Web may be set to show different forms of traffic … contrary to your experiences, many such counters do indeed “count” page views. SBR offers a wide variety of content across all of its pages and our visitors tend to visit and re-visit that information they find to be most useful. The numbers you see now reflect this. However, as is our prerogative, we may make further changes to the counter, as well as to other more important areas of our sites.

I hope that this satisfies your curiosity and, again, I’d like to thank you for your abundant interest in SBR’s traffic.

    Best Regards,
    Sean - SBR

change the counter to reflect “page views”
so if you hit the refresh button 2000 times the counter registers 2000 views.

Really don't care but why don't you just hide the thing if it gives out useless information. Your own staff is even confused on how it works.

Not sure that the number of page views on our sites would be classified as "useless" information by everyone, but I agree that it is certainly some of the least important data provided by SBR. I, for one, could do without it but that would have meant one less highly important and relevant thread on this forum

true but then you programmers wouldn't have anything to do but to make sure that the edit, ban and delete buttons are working 24 hrs a day.

First people werent happy with the "No Ads" in that spot, now some arent happy with what is there now. A no win situation.

    But anyway..
I guess it would be better to show the unique number then each page viewed.

I think that number should show visitors, I mean be a running total of unique daily visitors. Page views only mean anything to marketing geeks anyway..i think.

Unique vistor stats that actually show unique vistors for the month is likely best as others have said. Even when that number is in just the 1000s, that really shows how popular SBR is as that is not at all easy to acheive.
