Default Way OT: My dog just died

she had cancer but had been doing better....she was literally just running around outside 20 minutes ago. i think she had a heart attack? idk...but she just died up on my couch. right before last Christmas my best bud, my black lab, passed away. Both of the dogs were over 12, but its really hard to see. lives being 'gone forever' is hard to grasp.

I'm sorry to hear that. Take it easy. I'm sure you have enjoyed 12 years of happiness. It's sad when you lose a friend.

I had to put down my 1 year old german sheppard pup last winter. Really had a strong bond with that pup. She was awesome and was smart as hell. She had an un treatable disease that couldnt be cured. Ended up having to put her down it was terrible.... Just remember all the good times with your friend Mofo.

we had her for about 7 and a half years, we got her from a rescue which is where we get most of our dogs. she was a little ankle biter, but we heard she had a real tough life before we adopted her and we always did the best we could. when we first got her she was scared of everyone and couldnt be picked up, but a few years later she was friendly with everyone that approached her slowly and the family could pick her up. she was a rough little girl but she was part of the family. we're not sure if we should bury her or cremate her, but we'll make that decision bright and early.

thanks bud

thanks guys, i wont bump this 45 times by replying to everyone, but i wanted to say thank. when she was diagnosed with cancer and an enlarged heart a couple weeks ago it was stressful. she was getting meds 4 times a day and she seemed to be doing much better. it stinks every time you lose one, but its well worth it for the memories. i cant imagine what i'll feel like when i lose a parent, but i do imagine i'll deal with it well. tough 2 weeks, tougher night tonight, but the replies here are nice to read. the worst part of a loss is feeling like no one else understands, thats the case with losing anyone you love. reading these replies here reminds me that others know what its like, and the company in that is comforting.

hope everyone has a great weekend.

Sorry for your loss. I just became a dog owner for the first time last year but have read on many sites how tough it is to lose your pal.

Here's the Rainbow bridge story for you.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It's a poem that was circulated on the Internet, but the author was never proven. There are several rainbow bridge pet memorial sites on the web.

This is really good

Seems like I have heard this before......I think my parents told me the same thing when they put my dog down and told me he was going to the farm.....Parents are such liars, and then the whole Santa Claus thing....what a scam

I had a small dog that was picking on my bigger dog many moons ago. the big dog tore the little one up pretty good one day and the result was the vet telling us that the little guy only had a 30% chance to live. he pulled through. a few months later, the big dog was struck with cancer and ended up passing away at the age of 2. that was really hard. that was probably the most impressive and kind dog in the world. if not, he was tied for those titles.

I had to put one of my Canadian Timber Wolves down(from cancer) and it was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but I took solice in the fact that I was not going to try to prolong his life for my selfish needs, and make him suffer for me. That wasnt going to happen. Period.

The finality of things is obviously whats so hard. there are many times where life confuses me. people say forever this and forever that, but Nothing is forever while Everything will eventually be a never again. that eats me up when i think about the fam.

Default I have been there with dogs that I thought of as humans.

My heart goes out to you because I know how important pets are too people who love them.I have adopted greyhounds from the track since 1980 and have taken such good care of them and spoiled them rotten. All lived long lives but it's still hard when they die.One actually did the same as your current dog where it was fine and came from a walk and just dropped of a heart attack in the house.I can tell you are like me where you let the dogs on the couch where you pretty much treat them like humans.A person that treats their pets well throughout their lives shouldn't have regrets when they leave the world for pet heaven waiting for you to come and join them many a decades from now.

yeah, my black lab (Rerun) that died last year slept in my bed and would follow me every where i went. we got him from the pound and spoiled him rotten. he, however, spoiled us 10 times more with his wagging tail, excited nature when we'd come home, and kind nature no matter the circumstance. he was truly a best friend...i love that dog, still, so much that its crazy. he was just the nicest animal in the world.

thanks for sharing that, i have a ton of respect for what you said.

memories are all we can truly live for. people say to live for the moment, i say to live for the memory. living for the moment will never be as rewarding, imo. i live to create times i'll charrish forever. sometimes i just take a mental picture of something simple like watching a movie with my 8 year old pal down the road or watching a true crime show with my pops. simple things are the best.

thank you.
