wow. the main reason Navarro is with memphis is because of Gasol. The wiz drafted him in 2002, i believe, and then traded his rights this year to memphis because he was a cry baby and wanted to play with his spanish pal. mem should have pretty good the rest of the way out.

The Commercial Appeal has learned that the Grizzlies have traded Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers for center Kwame Brown, rookie guard Javaris Crittenton and first-round draft picks in 2008 and 2010.

The decision was made that the Grizzlies could no longer move forward with Gasol on and off the basketball court.

The deal allows the Grizzlies to gain salary cap relief, as Brown is in the final year of a deal that pays $9,075,000.

Also today, a Grizzlies source said that forward Stromile Swift has been traded to the New Jersey Nets for center Jason Collins.

The Grizzlies and Nets have been discussing a deal for the past week, and it is expected to be finalized on Monday.

To that end, Swift had a meeting with Griz coach Marc Iavaroni and general manager Chris Wallace Friday, was sent home and did not practice with the team. Swift will not play in Saturday's game against Utah at FedExForum.

    More details as they develop

Yeah hes very versatile... A lineup like this with a healthy Bynum would be scary

    1. Fisher/Farmar
    2. Kobe
    3. Odum
    4. Gasol
    5. Bynum

And then you have Walton and some other decent guys coming off the bench. I like the looks of this Lakers squad

    How about this lineup . . .

    J Kidd
    K Bryant
    L Odom

Def, i like farmar better than fisher. I don't watch nba really. But they seem like they could contend in the west now

Good pickup for the short term I just think they gave up a little too much for him... The players they gave up suck anyway but TWO first rounders..? I don't know about that..

If the lakers do well and their 1st round picks are in the 20s its gonna be tough to find a player to be the same as gasol. I used to follow philly and they had picks in the 20s often and got no one basically. Unless they just didn't know how to draft

What? That's way too much to give up for Kidd. I wouldn't trade Farmar straight-up for Kidd.

The draft picks will be in the 20s anyway. And the Lakers are already a young team... they don't need more youth.

Great trade for both teams. I've never been that big of a fan of Gasol, but he can score in the low post, and he'll be the 2nd or 3rd option (once Bynum returns), as opposed to being the No. 1 option in Memphis, something he's not suited for. How do you guard both Bynum and Gasol on the block? You can't double either, particulary with Kobe's presence on the floor. Now Odom's the No. 4 option on offense with little responsibility to score, which is perfect for him. The Lakers will be scary good offensively. They were already a legitimate contender in the West with a healthy Bynum. If/when he returns, look out.

Great trade for Memphis as well. They're not going anywhere and had to get rid of Gasol. They get cap relief with Kwame's expiring contract, as well as Crittendon, who has the potential to be a star. Not sure how he'll get minutes with Conley and Lowry already in place, but they could always ship Critt elsewhere and get value in return.

They have the finishers and the wing guys. Odom and change for Kidd has to be a no-brainer for Mitch right? He would be the Danny Ainge of the west if he pulled that off.

I really think the Lakers gave up too much here. Two first round picks for Pau Gasol? Not to mention their first rounder from this past year. Come on...

Did you see they signed Aaron McKie just to make the trade work, and then he is about to get cut. So McKie makes 500k for just signing his name.

McKie signed a two-year contract before last season, but decided to retire before this season, thus the Lakers still owned his rights. They didn't just sign him for the purposes of this trade.

I take it back, you are correct. Thought '06-07 was McKie's only season in LAL, when in actuality he signed the two-year deal in the summer of '05. My apologies.

Here's whats funny. The Lakers tried to get Garnett and when McKale traded him to Boston, everyone in LA cried about it being foul play since McKale played for Boston. Now the Lakers get Gasol for basically nothing, and you know Jerry West had something to do with this, I wonder if the LA faithful will cry foulplay on this. Nope.

West retired after the draft. He no longer works in Memphis' front office.

It's interesting that the Lakers, in their attempt to appease Kobe, were discussing a Jermaine O'Neal trade in the summer but were reluctant to part with both Odom AND Bynum (trade seems even more ridiculous now with Bynum's emergence). Now, they get Gasol, a significantly better player than O'Neal, while keeping both Odom and Bynum. Great trade for the Lakers, and this is about as well as Memphis could have done given the circumstances.
