Default Mets close to landing Johan Santana

The Johan Santana trade discussions finally might be entering their final lap, and the Mets still appear to be the favorites to land the two-time Cy Young Award winner.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported yesterday that a trade of Santana, a Minnesota Twin since 2000, "is expected to occur within 10 days." That matches a widely held industry belief that the Twins have every intention of moving Santana before the start of spring training.

The Yankees don't want to include Phil Hughes in a trade for Santana, as general manager Brian Cashman made clear Friday night at an event at William Paterson College in New Jersey. Boston always seemed more interested in keeping the price high for the Yankees than actually acquiring Santana for itself.

The Mets, meanwhile, have held off on signing free-agent pitchers Livan Hernandez or Kyle Lohse until the Twins decide on Santana.

The Mets are willing to give up multiple prospects for Santana, who wants a six-year, $150-million extension in return for waiving his no-trade clause. To date, however, the Mets have not relented on giving up minor-league outfielder Fernando Martinez in addition to outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Deolis Guerra, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey.

The Twins tried to get the Angels involved in the Santana discussions, the Pioneer Press reported, but the pitching-heavey Angels are more focused on trying to upgrade their offense.

Did you guys see the way Johan pitched in the second half of last year? He is clearly past his prime and/or guys have figured him out. I love this move for the Mets, as I am a Braves fan and believe that this could possibly do the Mets in.

If the Mets are serious players in this, the Yankees will no doubt increase their offer which could, in turn, lead the Red Sox to sweeten their ante.

I've got futures on both the Mets and Mariners, so seeing them acquire Santana and Bedard respectively would be A-OK, rooty-toory fine and dandy by me.

I am a huge mets fan. This is the best news i have heard in a while. I was really pissed off about us trading lastings milledge to washington for crap, but this would make up for it. There is no way he is past his prime and he will be a force in the east. I live here in atlanta wile and tell you now the braves have no hope if we land him. With johan as the ace and up and coming future cy young winner maine pitching second and then putting pedro third. We will be dominate. I believe we will still get livian or lohse, but most likely livian. We needed to do something now with our staff because we had no true number 1. I think the re-signing of luis castillo at second will help this team more then anything this year, since we need a contact hitter after Loduca left. This is great news.
To top it off i just found out that my wife suprised me with a week in march at port st lucie and she bought tickets to 4 spring training games for me and her to go to. What a wife that would suprise her husband with spring training tickets. Great day.

wtt down the stretch when the Twins needed him most he gave up 4 runs in 7 innings, 4 runs in 6 innings, 4 runs in 6 innings, 1 run in 7 innings, 4 runs in 8 innings, 6 runs in 7 innings, and 2 runs in 3 innings. There is a reason that they don't want him anymore. Or maybe I'm just jealous that the Braves aren't going after him

True but he also had 35 strikeouts in those games and two were against detroit, one against cleveland and 2 against the white sox all good hitting teams. He also had the 17 strikeout 2 hitter in august against texas. I will say he did look more worn down at the end of the season, but putting him in the national league will make a huge difference.

Looks like the deal is official.... Mets send Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Deolis Guerra, and Kevin Mulvey to the Twins. The Mets still have to work out a six or seven year extension for Santana, according to reports.

me either Mofo they gave up a lot but you know what... In the NL this makes them clearly the favorites and if it wins them a title it will be well worth it. So I cant say its a terrible move

The Tigers vs. Met WS. You heard it first here.

Seriously though, those boys want it most. Throwing everything and anything out there to win. This is how baseball should be. The Wankees should take notes.

Screw the Mets. Ever since they announced the Mets would be selling tickets on TV the morning after the NLCS for the Subway Series, and me and about 10000 other people stood outside in the rain all night, and Phillips came out around 9 AM to say tix would only be sold online that Friday because plans have changed. I say screw that shit team that only caters to the big corporations.

My buddy went to Yankee Stadium, and stood outside all night. Did he get tickets. Yup. Because the Yankees, and Steinbrenner, actually give a shit about the Die-Hard fans. I'm sorry, if you're a New Yorker, and you're not from Queens, you're a jackass if you like the Mets. They may win the series once in the next 5-10 years, but they always have been, and always will be, the garbage team in NY.

SI.com and FOXSports.com are confirming that the Mets and Twins have agreed to a Johan Santana trade and that the 72-hour window for a contract extension is in place.
According to Jon Heyman, people familiar with the Mets thinking say they'd like to keep it to a five-year contract while Santana is believed to be seeking a deal for six or seven years. Still, we doubt it'd go this far and then fall apart over money. Each team in the running for Santana had a pretty good idea of what it would take to sign him. Heyman also adds that the teams discussed possibly substituting reliever Jorge Sosa for Philip Humber in recent days, so Twins fans at least have a little something for which to be thankful.
