Default are the twins screwing up if they dont move Johan?

The Twins say they're not panicking while holding out for the best deal for Johan Santana. But word within baseball circles is that offers by the New York Yankees (no more Phil Hughes) and Boston Red Sox are diminishing by the week

    from mlbtraderumors.

They are if they don't sign him long-term themselves. Have heard the arguments both ways about when they should trade him, either before the season starts or at the deadline. I've got to think they can get more for him in Feb-Mar than they will in July, just because it's going to be tougher at the deadline to put together a quick deal to sign him beyond '08 for the acquiring team.

I really wish Minnesota could keep him, but I guess that ain't gonna' happen.

I don't really believe this so much. Let the Mets somehow become big players, and the Junior Mint Steinbrenner boys will put Hughes back on the list.

Look, no one is talking about the Elephant in the room: No one wants to pay twice for Santana. you don't trade players, you trade contracts, and Santana's is going to be a bitch. All the offers you read in the newspapers are bs, the truth is Santana is currently worth nowhere near what people think he's worth. The Yankees will not trade Phil Hughes for Santana straight up. Santana wants to get paid like a free agent, so the Twins are going to get value as if he were a free agent. The Twins are screwed.

they need to trade him to get value now. If they don't trade him they need to resign him. They need to resign him before he hits the market or he's gone.

I think Johan has a no trade thing, so for him to agree's he's demanding a long term extention.

They need to unload him to the NL. The NL needs some more talent.

Hell yes the Twins need to trade him now. Johan has some kind of No-Trade clause (whether its 100% is not clear) and there are rumors saying he would not waive the clause during the season. I personally feel Johan is bluffing and that he just wants to get it done before the season starts to get rid of the distraction. But do the Twins really want to call that bluff? I sure would not if I were them. They should get what they can now.

He is NOT bluffing about wanting to get paid. That is why there hasn't been a trade. He has more trade value than say... me, but not nearly as much as the public thinks. It's like high NFL draft picks. Teams are not nearly as willing to trade up as they used to be and teams that want to trade down are unwilling to take much less than those picks used to be worth.

i thought he lost the no-trade clause, but i may be wrong. im sure someone here knows for sure. it looks like its the yanks or mets left, i dont think either will make it happen.

Red Sox can put the best deal on the table without really hurting there overall team. Yankees need him the most. Personally, I wouldn't mortage your furture on Johan. Johan will play at his prime for another 7 years? Hughes has his whole career ahead of him. Hughes isn't bad, he isn't a Johan, but at this point you need all the pitching you can get, whats giving up 1 starter for another one that wants a phat payday so he can bounce when its over get you?

I understand you have to give something to get something good, but there is a good chance Johan goes to free agency... then you can get him for just the $$$

Default Minnesota Papers Says Twins Will Trade Him Before Spring Training

According to this article, the Twins will trade him before spring training and are "most intrigued" with the Mets offer.

    Santana has two options:

    1. Negotiate a contract with a team that is willing to trade with the Twins for his rights (the trade being contingent on Santana agreeing to a trade).

    2. Become a free agent at the end of the season.

He would prefer option 1 but wants to be paid as if he took option 2. As a general rule you don't pay extra when you are already paying the free market rate so teams are unwilling to give the Twins any real value for Santana. The Twins have no leverage and are trying to fake it and hope no one notices. The Mets might overpay for Santana, but overpay is a relative term. If Santana would only cost 15m a year the Twins would be getting great offers.

SI.com's Jon Heyman and the Minneapolis Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III recently weighed in on the Johan Santana situation.

Neal says the Mets, Red Sox, and Yankees have all had recent discussions with the Twins about Santana. He says the Twins have "stepped up their efforts" to make a deal before Spring Training.
Heyman believes the Mets have taken the lead. He thinks it would take five or more prospects, and submission by the Red Sox and Yankees.
Heyman says the Twins may prefer Carlos Gomez over Fernando Martinez. That would be good for the Mets, who do not want to part with Martinez.

from mlb trade rumors. mets in the lead? get him out of the al, nice.

    Mets getting closer?

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that Ryan Church could be included in a deal for Johan Santana.

Silverman indicates that Church would be paired with Fernando Martinez and at least two other prospects. The Mets are apparently offering Church as a replacement for Carlos Gomez, who wouldn't be included in the deal. Church could be used in center field instead of the Twins moving Michael Cuddyer over, but he's more suited to patrol a corner.

church? i cant imagine he helps the deal much.
