Default What comes first? Talent or Skill

The elite, best of the best, have high levels of both talent and skill. Which do you think is honed first, talent or skill. It seems as though MJ, Moss, Marvin Harrison, Bonds, etc. initially had talent and developed skill later to become great. So it seems to me that talents comes first and skills put them over the top.

The talent is first. You could get all the training in the world and if you don't have the talent you will never develop the skill.

It is a combinations of both.

Motor Learning experts would say that an athlete is not an expert until they have experience 10 years or 10,000 hours or dileberite practice. This is an example of skill developed through time. But at the same time talent is also developed.

Talent can be defined as running speed, jumping ability and so on. This kind of talent is usually developed at a young age called the window of opportunity. During this time children can increase their talent by practicing a skill. An example would be a young boy developing a good arm at a young age by throwing rocks. He wasn't born with a great arm but he made lots of nueral connections by lots of throwing. But at the same time he has to have a genetic make up allow for large gains to develop. So talent is not always the case of nature, but definitily comes first.

Skill then comes through long periods of practice and game experience that allow an athlete to change their motor system based on the stimuli and feedback from the environment (opponents, basketball hoops, tennis nets, baseball pitches ect.) The say the last 10% of inmprovement can take just as long and it took for the first 90% to come. An some althetes may reach a point where it is physically impossible for them to improve (100 M dash).

In nutshell. Nature (talent) affects Nurture (skill) and Nurture affects Nature.

Talent is a natural ability, meaning you're born with it.

Therefore, it obviously comes first.

Skill is developed.

Talent is worthless without hard work.
Skill is limited by talent.
