Default OK, All You Norv Detractors and Marty Fans - SHOW YOURSELVES!

I'm not going to make the names public in this post, but this post last August will, for those who wish to click on and read

    Norv Turner

Will say that the most famous (notorious?) poster here went on record pre-season as saying: "Turner is a proven loser. SD will be no factor this year." Or words to that effect.

Some other normally sharp posters who were big Marty fans also blew it.

Doesn't matter if the Chargers get blown out in Foxboro next Sunday. They made the championship game, something they never did under Schotty. And without their QB and the league's premier RB for part of the game.

(I doubt SD has a chance in NE. Two trips across 3 time zones two weens in a row, cold weather, and a brutally efficiennt offense - tho Pat defense is nothing to write home about. But they're there - and where's Schotty? Only a team that does not want to win postsseason will hire that guy, and of course his son)

I was a big Norv detractor and still am, although he did a nice job today with his offensive game plan to attack Indy's overrated defense.

Yes, they likely will get blown out next week, but a key for Norv is how well the team does in the next couple of years. He was handed a playoff caliber team. Let's see them keep it going.

Pete Carroll was handed a playoff team and ran them into the ground after going 10-6 the first season.

Still, the "proven loser" is Schottenheimer - in the postseason where it counts. He may do well with a young team, with his motivational tricks (getting down on the sideline turf and pounding it to give his defense energy) but 5-13 postseason speaks volumes.

The GM is the key to a team's long-term success. Some guys know how to draft and plug with veterans etc -- and some don't. Charger's AJ Smith does. Al Davis used to, but no longer. All that shows on the field.

There are to be sure different levels of competence with HCs, but you still can make a silk purse from a sow's ear. Dungy didn't make Indy a winner as much as Polian did.

Let's see, Marty is stilll looking for a job, last I heard. Hmmm, Redskins, where he was fired before taking job with SD? Or KC, where he was for years? Herm would have to go, tho. Gee, has Parcells hired a HC yet for Miami? That's where Marty may work well, pounding the turf --- and getting pounded if he ever again reaches postseason.

I'll take Schottenheimer over Norv, and lay the spread if I have to. Norv is going to get Norved this week.

He's doing better than Wade Phillips. That's for sure.

I know I was doubting Turner at the start of the year and his team has been playing great the past 9 weeks in a row. I think they are on a roll and they could play New England tough in the Championship game on Sunday also. I think his team had to get adjusted to his system and once they got used to his system they started playing very well. Next season they are going to be very tough to beat if the injury bug don't hit them, they have a lot of depth and it showed yesterday how deep that they are. I think they could keep New England down to only losing the game by less than 10 points. They could put a scare into them also.

I have to admit that I was negative towards Turner, and never thought that he would take a already good team to the playoffs and win a game. Sorry Norv. I still think that Marty Shot-In-Wad is still an asshole though.

Your my hero ritehook, so lets try and figure it out, you liked the chargers they hit for you, and now you bring back an archived thread (of course you don't want to mention names, but you do by revealing the thread)you kind of laugh at those who thought Norv was not the best of coaches for the chargers, with reason i might add, either way they were just giving there opinion.they are entitled.

So now you make a point to bring back the article, For what reason? to mock them? must be, surely not to make them look good.

Ahhh so some where wrong in what they thought of the Chargers and Norv Turner back in August.(Big f.u.ckin deal)

In reading that link i can tell that you are a knowledegable guy when it comes to football, yet by taking a poke at 3 very good posters plus 2 moderators you seem to lack some knowledge in the area of common sense.

If looking and finding predictions or opinions or thoughts posters make here that don't come true and then shoving it in there face is your idea of a ok thing to do then you then surely dont get it.

As far as your opinion on the Chargers is concerned congrats, you were spot on,and it was a very strong win yesterday.

Keep up the good work in regards to your NFL thoughts and capping,as you obviously know your football stuff.

However if i may quote you

"some other normally sharp posters also blew it" as you did IMO by bringing back this link to berate others earlier opinions.

left out the marty part in the quote>

I'll eat SOME crow. I'm a huge Marty fan and think he got the high hat. I'm a fan of Norv to a point, but my respect for him is nowhere that of Marty. I thought it was a horrible decision and I still do.... But that win vs the Colts was impressive.

    Reply to Al Masters:

Al, other posters revive old threads; I've seen some posted in these forums that are years old, rather than just months.

And, no one had to click on the link. I see a lot of links in fourms, rarely do I click on to read. I did mention JJGold's bash of Norv (not by name but it was clear that it was his) but Coach gets bashed so often here the one I noted wasn't even a wrist-slap.

Also, if someone gave an opinion that turned out to be mistaken, I see nothing wrong with bringing it up. I crapped out totally in 'capping the Bowls, and came back on that thread to admit it.

I can see how pre-season someone could look at Norv's record and express doubt that he would be a good coach for SD. (Tho again, NFL teams are built by clever, talent-knowledgale GMs, or in certain cases, like Parcells, probably Bellicheck and a few others, by prominent Head Coaches. Or by owners, like Al Davis, who in his senility has destroyed the Raiders with bad drafts and bad free agent signings)

But the praise and admiration for Marty was, to me, inexplicable. After once more getting bounced early, and at home, he had the colossal gall to demand a huge salary increase, and that the Chargers hire his son as Off Coordinator!

That was a challenge to the Spanos family, in effect telling them, "Hey Greeks, it's me or AJ. Make your choice."

And the Greeks indeed made the right choice.

    ritehook,

While i have complete respect for your above stated thoughts on the chargers and football, and while i do agree with your comment about older threads being rehashed regularly.

It just looks to me(regular poster) that by putting the link up with the names of 3 quality posters, one being JJand 2 mods, you ineffect took a shot at the them, although you never actually wrote down there names.

yes other bring back threads, but to laugh others??

Let's not exaggerate Norv's impact with the Chargers. Have you seen the players on that roster? The adjustment to Norv was rough, and Chargers are still not performing at level they're capable of. Apart from the coaching staff, there is no reason why the Pats should be better than the Chargers. If Norv gets these guys performing at that level my hat's off to him.

Look at his comments last night. He called it 'the most gutsy performance' he's ever been a part of. Excuse me? I realize what the Chargers pulled off, but did he just tell his players that they played far above what he really thought them capable of? My point is simply that he's not cultivating an attitude of invincibility. And that is what sets champions apart from contenders.

However, in this case, the players may bring that attitude, and they are the ones pulling Norv up by his bootstraps.

I wasn't laughing at them - we all make mistakes. Even quality posters. (Tho would have been nice if one of them at least had 'fessed up that they made a boo-boo in their rap at Turner).

Certainly doesn't mean that eveything they say is wrong, and I agree with a lot of what the 3 you mention have to post. (Just not on the thread in question!)

If I make a prediction that turns out wrong, I don't mind if someone points it up. Ol' Harry said something about "heat" and "kitchens."

No one should come on a Net forum of any kind of he has a thin skin. Unlike a sports bar, where you can say anything outrageous and it's forgetton next instant, the words you type in here are -- well, FOREVER!

Sure, Sham. Both will be home for February. But Norv will likely be back next season. Think Marty will have a job as HC in NFL? Maybe a college team will hire him. (Duke?)

If the number jumps to 16 I'll still make a small bet on SD. Last four games that NE played as Double Dig fave they failed to cover. Public overrates them.

Inclined to agree. In Mass, two 3 time zone trips in two weeks for Chargers (bring the melatonin, boys) and they rarely play well in the Northeast. Not to mention the injuries.

But please name the team or NFL coach who would have fared differently. If memory serves, Indy lost to NE this year, and in thier own dome. And Sunday in the Boston area is supposed to have temps in the low 20s.

i thought the colts had a real shot at the Pats (better than SD)

colt secondary looked pretty crummy though and the red zone turnovers were killer

bolts deserve to advance as painful as it is to miss colts/pats
