With that highlighted I would say Good Athlete (Great Person). In many cases a great person becomes a role model ... therefore, you will have a captain by nature . At least thats my thought

I'd say great athlete, crappy person.

The media spends more time publicizing the players who have crappy personalities and aren't upstanding citizens anyway, and if they're great players they cover them even more. Guys who donate to charity lots or really have good hearts are covered but aren't the headliners like the more flamboyant athletes are.

When you have a great player on your team, assuming it's not someone on your offensive line, that has to help fan interest and ticket sales. I think owners would prefer less controversial, more squeaky-clean players off the field, but I think so long as the player isn't killing dogs or beating his wife you'd prefer the greater player to give your team the best chance at a championship.

I try not to let the media's spin decide for me whether or not they're a good person, but I have to admit to not always being successful at that.

A good example that comes to mind immediately is the difference between Barry Bonds and Craig Biggio. Personally, I'd like to have had both on my team in their prime. Bonds is probably not quite as bad or as big an asshole as he's so often portrayed, and I'd be willing to bet that Biggio hasn't always had his halo on as straight as some would have you believe. The key is probably having a manager/coach who can somehow get the two personalities to mesh and get along at least between the lines.

You also have athletes who seem so affable when the cameras are on them, yet you hear horror stories about them away from the field of play. Two names that come to mind in this regard are Lee Trevino and Kirby Puckett, two men I admired from a sports standpoint but the stories about them off the course or diamond lead me to think otherwise.

I'd have to go with good people. Same with any occupation. Otherwise we get the Knicks and old Trailblazers.
