I look at as many stats as I can find. I don't use the sportsbook statistics because the ones like you mentioned either a) make my decision more difficult or b) make me want to lean a certain way.
I use team and individual player stats, matchups, trends, but in the end I try to come up with what I believe the final score will be(mostly applies to sports besides basketball) and then set my spread accordingly. If I see an edge, I play that game. If not I usually pass.
It seems that after I study the game I go with my gut on who to take(if anybody at all).
As for basketball, I follow the SEC and ACC the closest and play mostly off feeling and recent games and matchups.
I am by no means a "pro" so take this info with a grain of salt.
