Default If you can pick any team of any year to go agaisnt the 07 Patriots, who would it be?

Mines would be the 1994 49ers

49ers had the best secondary in the league that year, with Deion Sanders taking care of Moss, the 49ers can focus on the other side of the field...

Defense loaded with play makers, Ricky Jackson, Ken Norton, and Merton Hanks

The Offense will keep the 07 Pats off the field
Steve Young, Ricky Watters, Jerry Rice, John Taylor and Brent Jones

    maybe 2001 pats....or 91 giants....or 83 raiders

3 teams who beat juggernaut offenses in the superbowl

how about the 07 ravens and a competent officiating crew.

I think it's more like..."What team of what year would you pick to go against the '85 Bears?"

Sounds like you would choose the '07 Pats

I was going to say 1985 Bears, but Wassy beat me to the punch.

Speaking of beating and punching, that is what Bears defensive line would have done to Brady.

The Bears had absolutely dominated New England in the first half, holding them to 21 offensive plays (only 4 of which resulted in positive yardage), -19 total offensive yards, 2 pass completions, 1 first down, and 3 points. Meanwhile, Chicago gained 236 yards and scored 23 points themselves.

Deion Sanders could not take away Moss.

Blanket him? sure. But Moss is so good at getting the ball over smaller defenders. If Cromartie had Deion's cover skills, he could take away Moss. That's about it.

1989 49ers. That team was on another level when they got to the playoffs.

Deion couldn't cover Moss in the late 90's, he wasn't really that old then

He was early 30's. I still remember that Thanksgiving where Dieon wouldn't play because of turf toe...But he did get to practice against Rice. That might help him.

My vote would have to be the bears. Chicago was so dominating that year, I don't think Brady would get any time to throw. That's what is great about these what if possibilities, you never know what might have taken place.

my choice would be some of the Pittsburgh Steeler teams in 1970's, the Raiders in 1983, and some of the 49er teams in 1990's, right along with some of the Cowboy teams in the 1990's also could beat this New England team.

Mainly because a lot of those guys had great years that they never duplicated, and HOF likes longevity.

Still, I would take that defensive unit for that one year over any other NFL defense in history.

Well, never duplicated might be harsh, but a lot of them had short careers.

I'm a huge fan of the 85 Bears, always have been. But they couldn't hold Marino and the '85 Dolphins to less than 38 points, so they ain't holding this NE offense in check either.

Why would you point out the ONE bad game the Bears had that year when they allowed an unheard of 10.9 points per game over 19 games (including playoffs)? The Miami game was an aberration, as they caught an emotional Dolphins team in Miami on a Monday night determined to remain the only unbeaten team, while the Bears had nothing to play for from a standings standpoint. The other 18 game were a truer indication of how great the Bears were, and yes that unit could shut down anyone including the 2007 Pats.

Because the Pats have yet to have that "one bad game". When/if they do, I will eat crow. If they run the (19 game) table then the deserve the title of "best ever" with no debate.

I assure you I was a big Bears fan in '85 and was shocked by that Monday night loss to Mia, but it DID happen and because it did IF NE manages to win 'em all then that makes them more dominant in my eyes.

Also, as each decade goes by, the athletes get that much faster & stronger which (20+years later) presents some major athletic match-up problems for the '85 Bears at this point in time....much like in '85 how we all said those Bears would beat the '72 Dolphins because athletes had gotten faster & stronger - the same argument applies now against that Bears team.

the imm rec was '72 and they lost in the next round to the perfect dolphins, so i can't vote for that year which was the year of their first playoff appearance. They won the super bowl after 74, 75, 78, and 79 seasons. And maybe their best defensive year was 76 when they lost in the AFC championship game --

    From ESPN site:

The Steelers defenses of the 1970s are legendary, but the 1976 unit was the best (slightly better than the '75 squad). Here's why: 28. That's how many points the Steel Curtain surrendered in the last nine games of the season. That's a total. As a result, Pittsburgh, which started the season 1-4, made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game, which they lost to the Raiders 24-7. (It's worth noting that Pittsburgh running backs Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier were both injured in that contest.)

The '76 Steelers didn't have it easy -- their opponents had a .528 winning percentage. But they had these guys: Hall of Famers Mean Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham and Mel Blount. And eight Steelers defensive players made the 1976 Pro Bowl team: cornerback J.T. Thomas, defensive end L.C. Greenwood, Greene, Ham, Lambert, defensive back Glen Edwards, safety Mike Wagner, and Blount.
    --------------
I remember that amazing run - 28 points in 9 games!
That team gets my vote --

Here's an interesting fact about the 74 steelers -----

In 1974, the Steelers chose four future Hall of Famers with their first five picks: Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth and Mike Webster. ------

If Pats win , it will be 4 in 7 years. Great, but a little short of Steelers 4 in 6 years. Although I will concede that steelers were never undefeated . Here's hoping the Pats don't make it.
