Default NCAA vs NFL OT rule

i like how ncaa does it. i don't think NFL OT rule is fair at all...the team who wins the coin toss has a huge advantage.

I really don't like the NCAA way, obviously in pro football the coin toss is important but that's what playing defense is for.

Pico: I think you're wrong about the team winning the toss (and obviously taking the ball) having a "huge" advantage. Anybody have the stats on this?

College Football OT is a joke. I'd like to see all OT's (NFL and College) decided by a full 10 minute session; 2 timeouts each team. If still tied, so be it.

I do kind of like the college OT....I heard a good point on ESPN radio a few minutes ago though.

They said the team that wins a college OT game is the team that isn't completely exhausted and/or has the best FG kicker.

You see a lot of 1 play TD possessions in college OT because the defenses are exhausted and you see a lot of them decided because one team can't make a FG. Doesn't really reward the best football team IMO.

What about the pro proposal where each team is guaranteed one possession in OT?

Especially in high scoring games, the advantage to the team that wins the coin toss is huge. Perhaps during the regularly season, leave it as is, but in the playoffs and superbowl they need to handle OT differently.

NFL Union will never agree to it

But i am sure 90% of NFL fans would favor the College style OT

Didn't think the coin toss was that big of a deal--didn't used to be. But since the kickoff was moved back 5 yards, the coin-toss winner gets the ot victory more than 60% of the time in NFL (just did a Google search).

Both teams should get at least one possession.

College gets out of hand with so many overtimes, and it being relatively easy to score. Mirroring that system would be silly at a professional level.

From a bettors standpoint, sure it sucks when your side never gets a chance in OT. It works both ways though.

From a fans standpoint, these games last long enough and every play in OT is key. The thrill of scoring in OT would be erased by knowing the next team is going to get the same chance. This isn't about always being a completely level playing field, its professional football. If you don't like the way OT is ran, play a little defense or prevent the game from reaching OT.

Perhaps take the kickoff out of the equation. Coin toss winner gets the ball on their own 20 or elects to play D with the other team starting on its 20.

There are a few fairer systems if that is what we are looking for. We could make the Pro system not sudden death but the first team to score at least 4 points. Alternately we could have a bidding system where each team lists a starting point on the field that they would be willing to start with the ball. One team could be willing to start from their own 4 yard and thus get to start with the ball. If you can't stop a team from the 4 yard line you deserve what you get. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing ties. Then I would stop losing under bets in the SEC.

The way college does it is perfect, this is universally accepted by everyone I've ever spoken with. Except the few in this thread that don't like it. How much more fair can you get than giving each team a chance to score. Each team gets equal possessions. Its absolutely perfect.

I prefer the NFL way. You're more likely to get burned +4 or +6in college OT than in the pros.

i like the college way , but i would like it more if they started further back, so that a field goal is harder to obtain

rocs i like the fact that they start in medium range field goal distance. The 3 is almost automatic. Therefore a turnover pretty much ends it. Although that wasn't the case in the UT/kentucky game today. However it wouldn't be bad to move it back to about the 50 and make them work for the turnover. I think this would lead to much longer games though. Overtimes would potentially last for hours.

Overtime is good for the over people......i won alot of overs cause of overtimes....

how about we do it like the soccer. after regulation time, we have 10 minutes of ET...it is not sudden death...they actually play out the whole 10 minutes. if the score still tied, then we go to penalty kicks. each team get to start off at the 10 yard line to kick a field goal. then back to 25, 30, 35... until one team misses.

that way, the kicker will feel really important

not if in nfl OT, where a field goal wins it, then you might still get the under.

I'd like to see a 15 min quarter. Still tied after that...NCAA Style shootout.

I play few Unders in college football because of the silly OT structure. Nothing worse than having an easy Under win destroyed by a high scoring OT. At least in the pros, the most scored in the extra session is 6--and usually just 3.

    I agree wholeheartedly.

I don't mind the current system. The only change I might like is giving both teams a shot at the ball once.

Something about the college way seems artificial to me and the pro way gives the coin toss too much weight. A 10 minute period sounds good but I'd kind of miss those sudden death moments too. I don't know, leave it alone I guess.

You just agreed wholeheartedly that the college football overtime is a joke. Then you said that you would like to change the NFL system into the college system

if you guys don't like the ncaa fb OT rule because of the betting o/u then there is a solution. at the greek for nhl o/u, only one goal will be credited towards o/u...that means if the o/u is 5 goals, and they tied at 2-2 regulation time, and end up 5-4 after the shoot out, then o/u is a push.

for football, books will change their rule if the nfl adopts the ncaa rule...i bet some books will have rules like, only the first score will count towards the total...that won't be much different than the current o/u for betting sake, because only 3 or 6 pts will be added to the total.

i like the nfl to change their rule because the team wins the coin toss usually choose to recieve, and they usually wins. that is not fair.

i don't think the books would change their rules like you say. the books like it when scores get out of whack because it ruins a lot of teaser plays
