Not even close in my view. Montana. How many Super Bowls did Young win? I think just one. Montana won 4, and had some tough playoff road wins over good teams to get there. If Dallas wasn't sleeping under Barry Switzer in 1992 NFC title game (falling behind 21-0), Young would have won no Super Bowls.

Steve Young ended his career with a better overall passer rating, completion %, Yards per attempt, 2700 more rushing yds, 23 more rushing TDs and did all this while playing 23 less games and not playing a full season til he was past his prime @ 30 years old.

I think it's a little closer than you think Seattle..

I also think there were much better teams in the NFL when Montana played. NY Giants, Washington, Chicago, LA Rams made for no easy playoff wins in those years.

Too bad Young didn't get more playing time in his late 20's. Young had to play the Cowboys and Packers who were pretty damn good.

My vote is for Joe Montana. The guy was a clutch QB and delivered when the game was on the line.

Joe Montana. But not by a larger margin.

Is it not good to see the 49ers struggling, and even at the QB position?

Steve Young is one of my favorite. But Montana edges him out. I remember Jerry Rice talking about the two of them on the radio a little while ago. He said what he preferred about Montana over Young is that he didn't need to adjust to him on the field.

    STEVE YOUNG is smarter!

Joe Montana was fired by ABC. he had no character!

    Steve has a law degree!

i'm tired of people only using super bowl rings as an indicator of a qb's greatness

so i assume that you also rank trent dilfer, brad johnson, mark rypien, & doug williams ahead of dan marino, dan fouts, & warren moon then?

There came a point in Montana's career that defensive coaches would tell their players not to hurt him since they didn't want to deal with Steve Young. However, overall I would go with Montana as his best was terrifying whereas at Young's best the Cowboys were still able to to get the best of him.

Can we say that Steve was the best lefty and Joe was the best righty in SF???

    Both were awesome though.

Thing I didn't like about Joe is when he left. Didn't he end up in KC???? That's just wrong man!!!

I would agree with that (who wouldn't) but my vote was for Montana. I think overall he was one of the best in the clutch. Elway was another that seemed good in the clutch but I never did like him.

When you look at Super Bowl rings, it's not close Montana by a landslide. But when you look at the other numbers it's much closer. Montanta but it's close.

Young was great but Montana's the best ever. I'll even take Elway over Young.

Montana. He seemed to win in the clutch every time.

Montana was the greatest clutch QB of all time.

Montana was magical. Somehow he floated above the field. The same field that Young would eat if he had too.

Young simply because of the scramble ability. They are about even passing wise but steve was a better runner. This creates a whole different dimension that defenses have to worry about.

On the field, Montana was "smarter" than Young. If I need an accountant, I'd take Young over Montana.

Scrambling ability as a liability for a QB in big games. Notice why a "scrambling" QB hasn't won the big game. Good defenses can beat a scrambling QB.

That's why I always hated Steve Young, because he was as much of a liability than an asset. Young gave away a few good seasons in critical playoff games. I recall one particular game when the Giants forced the scrambler into a scrambling fumble, trying for an extra yard. I think they knocked him silly on one of those scrambles. I was rooting against the Giants for that particular game, and it was just miserable.

The 49ers had such great teams when Young was at QB that Bubby Brister could've won a Super Bowl with them. It's a huge trajedy if you're a true 49ers fan, that they only got one more after Joe left. They were lucky they got Deion for that season, or it would have been zero Super Bowls in the '90s.

Young was a scrambler, but he didn't eat up the yards. Scrambling typically means you no longer see the field. A clean pass, like Montana threw, always beats a scramble.

To me there is absolutely no comparison. Young was a hard worker and deserves credit. Montana had a rare genius.

Who was greater: Muhammad Ali or George Foreman? Same thing. Rare genius versus hard hitter. Those who saw both in their prime would just shrug off the question.

Joe Montana did cocaine and dated strippers! Dont send your kids to his football school!

STEVE YOUNG has much more class than that loser and more money too!

Steve Young has the better stats..

How many Superbowls a QB won means nothing to me, 11 players on both sides of the ball one player should never get too much credit.

eto was right, i assume that you also rank trent dilfer, brad johnson, mark rypien, & doug williams ahead of dan marino, dan fouts, & warren moon then?

This is sortof like a Alex Rodriguez vs. Derek Jeter question. ARod has better numbers, but Jeter is an excellent clutch player. I say Montana here, but it's definitely way closer than most people think.
