Default OT Is it a touchdown if the runner has to weave in and out of the marching band?

I am watching this crazy show....craziest moments in sports.

I just watched a runback from a kickoff where the recieving team laterals about 15 times, and the marching band for the other team, thinking the game is over pours out onto the field, but the play is still live, and the runner has to dodge the marching band, some of whom are trying to tacke him.

The refs have a conference and declare the touchdown good. LOL

What a crazy play. Funny as hell.

the funniest thing was the fan from the stands who took the ball from Favre and started down the field with the ball. The look on his face was like a kid on christmas day. Then he actually broke a few tackles from the security people before being laid out by some old man. It was hilarious.

Are you guys talking about the Cal-Stanford play from 1982? That play is legendary, but I imagine there's plenty of you guys that were too young to remember that one. It was pretty cool. I did a search and found the Utube, hopefully it works for you guys...

craziest sports vid i ever witnessed was this hs game. One team was down 4 tds late in the 4th. they score and in the matter of minutes connect 3 straight onside kicks and scoring.

All that in 3 minutes. they tied the game with 10 seconds left. they kick off and the other team rins it back for a td and wins the game.

I love that ESPN commercial that stages a "reinactment" of "The Play" with the vibrating football game. They've got one of the players taped to a yardstick knocking over the band. I laugh so hard that I crap my pants when I see that commercial. I like it better than the actual "The Play".

I think the ironic humor for me is that I played electronic football as a kid, and we never had that much fun. Electronic football is about as boring as watching paint dry. Electronic football is also extremely tedious, trying to line up the players, then my runner would just sit and spin in a circle. ugh. I like this version of electronic football better.

what was the final penalty for stanford? too many men on the field? or unsportsmanship conduct for storming the field too early?

According to Wikipedia the "penalty was called on Stanford for illegal participation (for too many Stanford players and the band being on the field), which the officials declined for Cal automatically."

so the refs can award a team td if the band storm the field before the end of the game?

is that rule still in effect? has there any games in ncaa history where the ref award a td to a team (other than 82 stanford-cal game)?

The officiating crew did not award a TD to Cal in the '82 game based on a penalty.

Rather becuase the play had already been ruled a TD they declined the penalty on Cal's behalf.

Had the TD not been legitimately (?) scored, that penalty could by NCAA FB rules theoretically still have resulted in the awarding of a TD to Cal.

The Michigan Wolverines attempted to score in the last seconds of its loss to Nebraska in the 2005 Alamo Bowl, this time off a play from scrimmage.[14] This ill-fated play had much the same result as the original: massive confusion and both teams were on the field at the end of the play. Unlike the Golden Bears, however, Michigan was stopped (after seven lateral passes) by one of the last Nebraska defenders 15 yards from the end zone and thus was unable to score a game winning touchdown. However, it was determined that the officials had made an error on the play by not penalizing Nebraska for on-field interference.

this is some bullshit. michigan should've won that game for on-field interference. i lost a shitload that day.

I always wondered about a play like that. I mean, if it's an absolute last play of the game or similar situation, can't the coach for the defending team get all of his extra defensive players kinda down on that sideline and if he gives the signal, just send out the rest of the team to tackle the ball carrier, you know, if the hook & ladder routine started to look dangerous. I mean, they'll maybe give a penalty for illegal participation, but unless they award a TD and the game, it's a win for the defense anyway. Even if the offense gets another try with included penalty yardage.
