running up the score
i always thought it is not cool in the nfl to run up the score like the patriots. they're making all the shitty teams feel bad.

They shouldn't have to play down to any team. Madden nailed it earlier in his breakdown, if they don't want to get bitch slapped, let them play defense. They're making millions.

The whole "running up the score" thing is getting old. Teams need to suck it up. It's the pros, not frickin' Little League.
What's worse:
Trying (can be seen as pouring it on - saying we're gonna score score score)...?
Or
Not trying (can be seen as disrespectful - saying you guys suck so bad, we'll let you win this play)...?

Classless if you ask me. they are throwing every play up 30 points in the red zone late in the 3rd.
reminds me of the Miami Hurricanes of the early 90's and now they are getting payback. You dont beat the f*ck out of teams and not have it come back to haunt you later. A little typo there...

i agree sbr john.
playing hard is one thing, continuing to throw the ball when you're up by 30 or 40 points late in the game shows a lack of class.
but i would also point out that calling them the miami hurri"coons" also shows a lack of class.

Not only that but they continue to go for it on 4th down in the 4th quarter when they are up 35 points. Kick the FG.

I bet the Bills last night with the points, lost that bet of course, and I have no problem with what NE did. It was up to the Bills to stop them, not for the Patriots to stop themselves.
I would have taken starters out sooner rather than risk injury, but there is always the chance of a miraculous comeback, especially with the Bills who had that famous playoff wildcard game in Houston and came back by 35 points or something like that about 10 years ago.

I thought what Belichick did was absolutely classless. The guy's an asshole, plain and simple. That said, he's an asshole who is an absolute genius when it comes to a football mindset. I'd take my money on a Belichick coached team every day of the week.
I never, and I mean never, thought I'd see Belichick running play actions with Brady still in the game up by 50 against his buddy Jauron. You can't get more classless than that. The Pats will most likely win the SuperBowl, but history will look at this team as classless cheaters no matter what their margin of victory from here on out.

If I pay money to see a game (or at least take the time to watch the ads on TV), I want to see both teams put in their best.
I am paying money (or at least my time) for the entertainment. I am not paying to see a second string quarterback come in at half time so that the team can show class. I want to see exciting and entertaining plays.
I agree with the comment that these guys are pros, they are not being payed to show class, they are being paid to put on a show.

If the amount of points scored or concede was an issue in case of tiebreakers on who gets to the playoffs you could see more teams play better defense to avoid being blown out. It can also be used for draft pick order in case of tiebreakers.

This is not rec league, it's not high school, it's not college where, depending on the situation, it is completely appropriate to call off the dogs and show some mercy...you're all highly paid professionals, STFU and play. |

When Florida beats Florida agricultural community college 70-3 that's rude. The players are of different class and coaches should know to slow it down.
When the Pats beat the Bills by 50, that is the BIlls problem. Both programs have the same salary cap and no disadvantages. In the NFL if you do not want to get beat by 50, play defense.

The shitty teams deserve to feel bad.
Their fans feel bad. The BMs who need them each week (often) feel bad. Both of these groups are out money because of the players. Why the hell should the players be exempted from feeling bad? At least their lame asses are picking up a paycheck.

It is pro football.
Those guys stand a better chance getting hurt handing it off to the RB up the middle to get clobbered than they do passing the ball.
There is no mercy rule in pro football. If the Bills were ready to quit, why were they running around like crazy with under a minute left trying to go on a big drive? So only the Pats have to quit right because they are the ones owning that ass?  |

Just to clarify... regardless of where anyone stands on the Pats running up the score...
In NFL circles, kicking FGs in this situation is seen as rubbing it in. Going for it at least give the defense a chance to stop them.
Media types (including ex-coaches and players) have said this when asked about the Patriots recently. |

I don't mind a team running up the score as long as they do it every time. Case in point New England had the opputunity to kick a last minute who cares field goal against the Colts that would have made my backing of the Patriots a winner, but they choose to run out the clock with the kneel down making me have a losing wager. Then against the Bills they throw the ball on fourth down when their up by 35 in the game instead of kicking the field goal.
