Default Best Browser? Goodbye Firefox, Hello IE!

A few days I asked what the best browser was, as I'd heard that IE had security risks.

Most who were kind enough to reply recommended Firefox.

Right, FF is more secure ----- becuase they do not enable "risky" programs like Active X or Java!

Wow, that's like saying flag football is safer than real football. Shoot, off course it is - but rather limited in complexity and enjoyment.

I'm sure their are plug-ins, add-ons, etc for FF, that only a complete computer nerd will not resent the hours it likely takes to track them down and install them.

FF looks great if you just want safe net surfing, and no more interactivity than posting on a forum like this.

But if you want to download photos in an advanced manner, like I do whenever I sell on ebay ---- FORGET IT!

Via Active X, ebay advanced download lets you view a photo before downloading it to an auction, thereby letting you pick and choose. With FF as the browser, all you can get is Ebay "Basic," text description but no thumbnail before you download, and the download takes minutes, not a few seconds as with Active X.

Forget it. Even if one could enable Active X onto Firefox, why bother? You then have a clone of IE. Just stick with IE in the first place.

Wow, you are so wrong. You don't deserve to use FF.

A lot of sites are made for IE and that's the reason IE has the hold. FF is like a poker room with great software but much fewer users. You have to stay where the people are.

Firefox is getting popular enough where webmasters are starting to worry about how they look in both browsers. Hopefully it is just a matter of time.

I'm sick of IE crashes myself.

I have been using firefox ever since it first came out, I have NO complaints. Occasionally I will come across a site that is for IE only, not to often, but when I do, I simply open Internet explorer, no big deal.

Also! There is a plugin for firefox where you can open an IE window in one of your firefox tabs! that is extremelly usefull!

    Firefox wins again!

Nope, I've checked with computer sites, that's the answer. Absolutey no good for interaction that requires Active X.

FF is good for the casual Net surfer, prob 80% of those who use the Web. But not for those who need more interactive functions.

It also takes, with this browser, minutes rather than seconds to dl a pic.

Google the question yourself, you'll see that I am correct. (Sure, as I stated, you can no doubt install Active X on FF, but why bother. it already comes with IE)

I use ebay regularly enough not to want to press yet another friggin' button to complete my desired action. And as I stay out of porn sites and other shady streets I don't worry too much about security. And have Norton to check for any probs, and run one of the free spyware and bug checkers every few months.

FF had some features I liked, but to say it's more secure than than IE is - Duh - like saying wearing a helmet is safer than not if you are biking it on a busy freeway. Everything has a price.

    Well that's comforting.

Because Firefox is a better browser with more upside. Maybe check back with those 'computer sites' to find some answers.

To repeat, if one needs no more interactivity than to post on a forum, then FF is likely good for you.

But why should anyone who needs to dl pics from a file have to put in fixes, plugins etc? Just stay with IE and stay out of shady sites. I remember that some of the porn sites try to trick a visitor into letting them into their Active X controls. Do that, and you may as well either get a hammer and smash the hard drive, or pay a PC repair guy the big bucks to reverse your foolishness.

One of the caches of programs like FF or Linux is that it is "open source," a blow struck against the evil Microsoft empire. But overall, open source has been a flop for everyone except a loud and active handful of nerds.

IBM may use a version of Linux internally (because every nerd has a different idea of cyber paradise there are dozens of versions of Linux) but I know of no big computer maker who has opted to save money (or stick it to his competition by lowering the price on his product) by putting in an open source OS or browser.

Likely because while they are paradise for nerds (and the nerd community is heavy on propagandizing aganst Gates and the Evil Empire of Microsoft) for most of the ordinary users of the Internet, the open source programs are shit. Too complicated, or, as is the case with FF, limited in practical usage.

For those who love to visit the porn sites, many of which are very eager to invade your hard drive, by all means get or stick to FF. For those of us who need the pc for practical purposes, stick with Gates until something really better comes by.

FF ain't it. Not yet, anyway.

I use firefox all of the time and I really like it and I don't have any problems with it crashing like IE does. I will stick with firefox and I will not going to anything else.

OK, score one for the nerds.

Dell, losing market share at an alarming rate (this formerly very snooty outfit that once only sold via the Net now sells their laptops at Walmart, for crissake!) is trying to stem the flow by grabbing at the supernerd market.

I don't think it will do them much good. Nerds don't need Dell to package a Linux OS for them, esp Red Hat, the most common version - hell, half the fun it doing it yourself, tweaking happily as you go along.

So your point was that Firefox doesn't ful implement Java and ActiveX. Of course, those claims were wrong, so now you're making a different point.

I gather the real point is that IE is better, regardless the facts. Sure, Firefox is faster, more customizable, actually more standards-compliant, and a lot more secure despite your claims to the contrary, as any industry expert (who's not a Microsoft flack) will tell you. But you can avoid all dangerous sites, stick with Microsoft's idea of what's good for you, and sit around waiting for Explorer to load your pages while the rest of us are working away.

I'm far from computer expert, not even close, but the various sites I've checked this out on tell me that FF is not compatible with Active X, which is why its photo download process sucks. (If these open source nerds are so bright, how come they didn't come up with a viable and safer alternative than the high risk vessel, Active X?)

I believe I saw this fact - that FF does not support Active x nor Java - on the Mozilla forum pages. Many FF lovers seem to recommend surfing with FF but changing to IE if you are on a site that requires Active X.

Because I do ebay fairly regularly - 3 or 4 times a week, sometimes for a 3-4 hours, I'll mainline with IE, keep FF in reserve.

You seem to be saying that FF is compantible withActive X. So, give me the link.

I was ready to go with FF, there were some things I like about it. But I'll keep it as an alternate browser, not the default one. And will activate it if I ever visit the Suzy's Sexy Sukking Sluts website.
