Default Hingis tests positive for cocaine, retires

OK, she's innocent, but instead of fighting it, she retires? She loses all her income ability because she doesn't want to drag the legal process? What a bunch of BS. She obviously has problems for her years off the court, but why not admit it, get help and keep playing?

Martina Hingis has stunned the world of sport by revealing that she tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon.

"I've never taken drugs and I am 100 percent innocent," said the former world number one who added that she was "shocked and appalled" by the results of test taken after she crashed out in the third round at the All England Club to Laura Granville 6-4 6-2.

Hingis said that she had hired an attorney to help her clear her name, but had decided to retire because she did not want to become entangled in a lengthy legal process.

It really bugs me that all these athletes who test positive.....for whatever, can never admit they made a mistake. Same deal with the Padres guy. People would have more respect for these retards if they just said they made a mistake and want to move on.

It's almost an insult on ones intelligence to fail a drug test and then blame it on a tainted cookie. It's laughable.

Sports drug policies are focusing in the wrong area. It should be about performance enhancing drugs. Not weed or coke. What's next? Heroin?

Just because someone's a pro athlete, that doesn't mean they have to be squeaky clean.

If you want to remain a professional athlete, you have to get help, otherwise your playing days are over.

Default punishment needs to fit the crime

There is a difference between using cocaine and going out in the street and shooting someone.

    She wasn't arrested was she?

If cocaine is not a performance enhancing drug, it probably actually inhibits performance, she should not have to retire for this; that is too strict.

JJGold, cocaine is very dangerous; please don't suggest people here should risk their life with the stuff.

there are plenty of people who take drugs who don't "need help" just as there are many gamblers who don't "need help." mandatory drug tests should never have been allowed, it is a breach of ones constitutional rights. we have a bill of rights that is constantly disregarded.....sigh....anyhow she, is just another "retiree" we are likely to see playing professionally again. it is unfortunate that the 11th commandment isn't mind your own business.....

I played tennis for an SEC school years back, and find it very hard to believe she was using coke right before matches and such. Granted losing to Granville 4 and 2 isn't the best result, but even getting six games off of a top hundred player would be tough for someone completely coked out. They may have caught remnants of coke from some usage during her time off, but I don't believe she'd be so stupid to be snorting or shooting right in the middle of a Wimbledon run. Nonetheless, I think we can all agree that it certainly wouldn't enhance her game. Thus, this should have no impact on her legacy. ....

That sucks. Had she been winning lately? I wanted to bang her a few years ago but forgot she existed for a while.

just shows, its all about the people who take the drugs, not all of them are corner dwelling bags of shit,, hard to call it a drug problem when she can afford to do it

Trust me, Shams. It's going to take a lot more than her to give me a heart attack. Stranded on a desert island with a naked Marg Helgenberger, Geena Davis, Catherine Zeta Jones and all the bacon sandwiches and ice cream I could eat might do the trick.
