inorder to get DTV do u need to have a phone line in the house? I am not in the US, so I am thinking of getting a friend in the US to get DTV and have it hooked up in Canada. Is this possible? He told me that a service men has to come to his place and hook it up in the house. is there anyway around this? Canadian TV sucks shits.. we can't even watch the US commercials.

The only thing the phone line is used for is ordering PPV off your remote. Also for the interactive ordering stuff. There is no need for the phone line to have DTV. You can also do a self install.

As Onlooker said the only need for a phone line being plugged in to your receiver is to order PPV off your remote control. But no, not being hooked up to a phone line does not interfere with or prevent you from receiving your satellite signal. You can give DTV a cell phone # for contact info on file and just have them hook the equipment up.

Expanding on what Onlooker mentioned above.

Your friend can buy the DTV set up at Best Buy or somewhere like that here in the States, and as long as your friend has a DTV dish up on his roof top that gets a satellite signal in order to activate the initial service, then your all set.

As far as the phone looker. The phone line can't dial out while that unit resides in Canada. So no worries about getting caught if indeed an accident does occur.

I haven't had a phone line connected to mine in 5 years. Just order PPV of the internet.

So my friend can go to Bestbuy and buy the unit and give them his US info and CC for billing and he can mail me the system in the box and I'll activate it here?

Your friend has to activate it in the U.S.A. before he sends it to you.
