Loosing in different ways: Discussion on Bad Beat vs. Backdoor cover vs. moose
A lot of people think these types of losses are the same exact thing and practically speaking they usually are since you lose your money. But you hear these terms used interchangably as if they are the same thing and in reality they are not. Let me give you some examples that should highlight the difference:
Bad Beat: LSU/Miami Under 41
If you some how magically had the newspaper that told your the future but half was blacked out but you saw that Miami puts up a total of 3 points in a game you might head out to the bank to request a big loan....one of the top defenses in the league facing a backup QB you figure this is a sure bet considering LSU struggled on offense in the SEC and that Miami did not allow more than 20 pts all year in a regular season game....Well everything goes as planned except for the fact that LSU put up 40 pts....to top it off, when it was 37-3 LSU fumbled Miami had 3 chances to pick it up and stall their drive but couldn't. To top it off, the points that knock the game over come via a 50 yd field goal which turn out to be the final points of the game. This is what I consider a really bad beat but with about 7 minutes left to go in the game you can't consider this anything other than a bad beat.
Moose Job: Clemson -9.5, Nevada -1.5, or South Carolina -3.5.
Clemson scores with less than two minutes left to make the game 19-10 with an Xtra point pending....Xtra point gets blocked from a kicker who was perfect all year. Clemson wins the game 19-10 thus (minimully) screwing Clemson backers of -9 and (majorly) screwing Clemson -9.5 backers.
Nevada blows a 10 pt lead in the final few minutes of the game...goes to overtime where they score to go up 7....CFU then answers with a score of their own but the CFU kicker misses an extra point giving Nevada a 1 pt win.
South Carolina up 21-0 and 28-7 against a Missouri team that has struggled against good competition. You figure with Steve Spurrier at the helm this should be an easy one...Missouri ends up winning outright.
Backdoor cover: Rutgers +10
Rutgers scores a TD in the final few minutes to pull within 5 to ensure the cover....these type of backdoor covers are more tolerable to deal with in football with spreads that are less than 14 pts b/c of the possibility of onside kicks being recovered since you assume a competitive game b/c the other team does not want to be in a position to have to field an onsider kick and thier first teamers are still in the ball game.....speards of more than 14 that result in backdoor covers are tougher to swallow....
Backdoor covers seem especially more prominent in NCAAB since so many meaningless baskets and such go in the final few minutes....NCAAB can be very difficult to stomach much more so than NCAAF in my opinion.
There are frontdoor covers but for whatever reason they seem to occur far less frequently unless you like to lay the points.
If you bet everyday you know exactly what I am talking about. Thus fellow degenerates be prepared to experience these type of losses over the course of a season, month, week, and for the truly damned in one day. Just make sure never to chase and do not let emotion get in the way.
