Default What happened to this place?

A year or so ago this was a pretty cool place. Now you have to cherry pick through the crap to find something interesting. Not everyone has to be like Ganch, but I don't think I've ever seen a forum dumb down so fast.

I came here the first week of July. Found lots of smart people talking about handicapping specific games in baseball. I guess there were about 10 of us. Then loudmouths started harassing anyone who actually posted a pick. I stopped posting baseball picks because of it.

I got very ill and made a post that I wouldn't be around much for a while. The loudmouths flamed that thread. If you can believe that.

I'm trying to start up a college football pick thread and an NFL pick thread. So far my college football picks have been pretty good. The same loudmouths that ruined the baseball handicapping forum started talking shit in all my threads in college football. these same idiots follow me around from forum to forum and thread to thread posting total shit in all my threads.

I have complained about these people repeatedly to the moderators but they refuse to ban them. So, I guess the moderators are to blame.

I do find some good posts from people whose names I have written down over the past months, but you have to dig through a ton of nonsense to find their posts.

I think the bottom line is that the moderators do not do enough to keep the loudmouths from ruining threads. A lot of good posters have left this place because of all the stupidity.

People get mad at me because I stand up to the loudmouths and won't tolerate their harrassment, but I'm not going to apologize for it.

curious- Keep up the good work. The mods finally gave in and fixed the line service because we were on them. They are slow but they do listen.

Nice work IMG. Didn't mean to slight you.

There's still a lot of improvements that need to be made. These guys have to spend less time gambling and more time working.

Dozer has a sheet for every employee there. Sean's rigged software for books so that he can past post. Of course he makes his plays under a friends name.

You don't get into a business like SBR unless you are a bettor. Once you get a taste of this life, you can never stop.

I was just thinking the same thing and considered starting a thread along the same lines. I for the most part just sit back and enjoy getting opinions on games (NCAA and NFL) and add an occasional point on teams that I follow. It seems this season the forum is filled with people just trying to P!$$ off other posters. I'm glad I got a glimpse of what this place could be; now I know who to look for and can avoid the other BS. Very disappointing.

I have to agree. This forum really has gone downhill this past year. Too many new members and not enough quality posters. Too many threads on the same topic...too much confusion.

It's turned into a daycare and the sandbox is full.
Mods don't want to waste their time cleaning it up.
I guess all the tirades are hits for the site, only logical explanation I can see.

DH,
I have found that the ignore button is a wonderful button!

It has made my sorting the shit from the good stuff a whole lot easier now that I've added about a half dozen or so to the ignore list!

You may want to give it a try!

Good to see the responses. It does seem like a sandbox too often.

Possible solution? I know of one betting forum that has a special section (a 'HOF') for longterm members with a minimum number of posts. More recently they gave existing HOF-ers the option to vote new members in. This seems to be a good mechanism to preserve quality over quantity.

My ignore button is well used, Doc.

Pardon my laziness earlier today, DH. Sorry that some of you are having to use the ignore feature, but understand completely why you do.

I've just spent the last few hours doing some regression analysis and I think I've nailed the problem.

What has happened is people are more interested in crapping out their plays with no rhyme or reason to them and calling them whatever version of 5*, lock, pick o' the week they call it so that they can say I told you so instead of just picking the damn games and enjoying the win whenever they get it instead of trying to appear to be a bad ass.

This place could be a gem, where gamblers help each other to become better gamblers. But it isn't. And since we're influenced by those we hang out with, in real life or online, a dumbed down forum probably makes many here worse gamblers instead.

I don't agree; you are looking for a forum where everyone agrees with you and YOUR opinions. You pick and choose who you hang with and who you listen to. Don't like someone, ignore him/her. Don't like a topic, don't read it.

Are you forced to associate yourself with crack dealers in real life? If the answer is no, apply the same theory to forums. Ignore who you want but don't think people are going to agree with you 110%. If you predict an earthquake and imply that a world leader was responsible, be prepared to have some pushback.

Quite frankly your views and opinions are unpatriotic and don't belong anywhere in America. That is my opinion.

That doesn´t work, coz most people just get tired of a place instead (me included). It may work if you wouldn´t have to see the threads at all - but they are there, creator ignored or not.

You are not forced to read or respond to any threads. This is a free forum so like it or not, there will be all types of members.

Make it paid like $5.95/month and you will see a big difference. Should be no sweat for all the big players on this forum

Solves the problem right? Wrong; people will bitch about the price. The world is one big bitch fest and everyone is in on it.

Bottom line is the owner can do whatever he wants so trust that SBR John will make the right decisions. Although biased, the mod team is solid.

I agree with the OP, but would add that, though there are many posters whose posts are largely unhelpful (and often seem designed simply to raise post totals), for consistent non sequiturs and true asinine stupidity you really only have to look to two or three posters.

I know, I know: "ignore".

Mods: could we consider not displaying post counts?

For all I care the administrators could get rid of them, or at least hide them in order for the BTP contest purposes. However, thats a management decision.
