Default OT - How Do I Get an Email "Read Receipt"

Still ignorant of all the ins and outs of pcs, tho I've had one ten years.

I recently set my OE to supply me with a Read Receipt, ie to notify me when a sent email has been opened.

But I tested it by sending a few email to myself (at a couple of web-based email accounts I have) and see nothing at OE that tells me such have been opened.

Anyone who may be able to supply answer?

    Default Microsoft Outlook

    ritehook,

It may depend on your email software. For example, I am certain that the option is available in Microsoft Outlook.

I've got the full Outlook, ritehook, assuming you mean you are using the Express version. Tools > Options > Preferences > E-Mail Options > Tracking Options...is that the route you took to initially set yours up?

These aren't infallible, some people block them. I have my software set not to send any read receipts.

Yes, that's the route I took. Then sent a few emails from my Outlook Express to a few of my web-based email accounts. I then opened the emails there, went back to OE, and can find nothing that indicates the mail was open. And of course I didn't do blocking of that.

Where would it tell me that the email has been opened?

It's possible the web accounts don't do read receipts. GMail I'm pretty sure doesn't.

No, most web accounts don't read receipts. (One does, but I forget its name). But I sent via Outlook Express, not the web-based account. I just received there, and opened when recieved.

Outlook should tell me when they were opened, but nothing, even tho it's set to "inform" me (I think that's the wording).

No, because google have to send the read receipt back to you. It's the client that opens the email that is responsible for sending a read receipt back to the sender.

Doesn't seem logical. That would make OE's Read Receipt useless, if it had to depend on the receiver's email program.

I understand that a user can block all such requests, but they have to take specific action to do so, and I didn't take such action at my two web-based email sites. And still can't see how OE is supposed to notify.

In OE you will receive an email entitled "READ RECEIPT: xxx read your email at xx:xx"

What I said was correct, and yes it is redundant these days with a lot of accounts. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_tracking
