Default OT - the Showtime series, Dexter

This is the EXTREMELY dark story of an avenging serial killer who also works as a blood spatter expert for the Miami cops.

Season 1 just came out on DVD this week. After seeing the first 4 episodes, I'm already ready to recommend it (to anyone with a taste for very dark subject matter). I imagine I'll zip through the rest of season 1 in the next couple days. I am instantly hooked.

You can either take it as a very deep exploration of your own psyche and see how your honest emotional reactions compare to the ideals you think you hold.

Or you can just take it as some sick, fascinating fun.

i love that show. dexter's half sister is my favorite character...her goofy, naive antics reminds of a girl that i used to know.

can't wait til season 2 to come out.

another great show in showtime is "weeds".

Awesome show. Second season kicks off next month I think.

Also, if your too cheap to spring for the DVD's, they still have the entire first season available for free On Demand, as long as you have Showtime as part of your cable package.

Ya know, I didn't like Weeds so much. I started watching but abandoned it partway through season 1. I'm not even sure how to pinpoint my problem with it. Just didn't grab me.

i can take a stab at it. if you're chronic smoker like me you know there is a lot of exaggeration in the show...and it can get annoying sometimes.

It's poorly written and it skirts every possible interesting angle it can if favor of playing it safe. I guess they think the premise is controversial enough that they don't have to take any more chances. Weak effort in my opinion.

    Dexter I like.

I like her too. It's not like a lot of actresses where I just want to see her nekkid. I mean, she's attractive enough, but I like her more because she's peculiar and seems very human. I really like the casting choice. They could have gone with a typical plastic Hollywood Barbie doll but I really prefer this slightly awkward (but still kinda hot) chick.

Here's something else I find odd about this show. Dexter has his girlfriend played by Julie Benz whom I think is beautiful. I love a pretty face and she has a great face. Well, she's all-around hot and I would love to do her and see her nekkid and all that.

But for some reason, on this show, whenever it seems like their sexual relationship is going to advance, I almost don't want it to happen. It doesn't feel right. I cringe.

    I don't know. It's just a weird frickin show.

i feel the same way. watching possible sex scenes seems awkward...i think it is because whenever someone get naked, he/she is about to get chopped up. i guess that is why i don't really want to see anyone get naked, even hot girls.

best show i've seen on tv...better than prison break imo

I've watched a couple more episodes and I kept thinking Jennifer Carpenter (the foster sister) looked familiar. So I looked it up on imdb.com. She played Emily Rose in the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

I thought that was a great under-rated movie. She was amazing in the freaky role. I didn't put the pieces together until now.

It's the kinda show that you like--and don't want to tell anybody you like it. I am reminded of the story abt Bronson reading the script for "Death Wish". When the producer asked him what he thought he said "I'd like to do it!!" and the guy said excitedly "You want to do the movie??!!"

Bronson replied--"I don't know abt that, but I'd like to do what this guy is doing!!!"

You want to off the bad guys--but Dex does it slow and alot more methodical (thus he is a serial killer). He is almost Clintonesque in his glee of getting over on everybody. I prefer the Bronson approach.

The show is a sick pleasure.

i saw the movie. didn't liek it at all. i never liked those religious movies.

Now you see, that's what I thought was interesting about that movie. It wasn't really religious (like, say, The Exorcist). If it was religious, I would have hated it because I'm about as anti-religious as it gets.

While all the religious people in The Exorcism of Emily Rose were spouting mumbo jumbo to explain the girl's "possession" there was always a scientific counter-explanation of her behaviors too. The religious people could be seen as un-evolved villains who stood in the way of proper treatment on the grounds of superstition.

On the other hand, there is a real power of faith. It seems silly to me, but people who honestly and deeply believe really can have a physical reaction to that belief. They really can.

I just thought it provided a lot more to think about than your average movie.

But whatever, I definitely thought Jennifer Carpenter did a great job playing the freaked out girl (whatever was causing the freakiness.) And we agree that she is good in Dexter.

Just getting into Season 3 on DVD. Loving it. It's hard to concentrate on the football because I want to see what happens next in Dexter.

Interesting bit of trivia: Dexter married his sister.

I'll give that a moment to have a sensationalist effect then explain: actors Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter got married.

i think dexter went down hill after season 1. there was too much relationship crap in the later seasons. i used to like his gf in season 1 because she seems like a timid damaged girl who is oblivious of what is going on....same goes for debbie. in later seasons, those two became bitches. poor dexter.

    season 1 is the best

Mudcat, Bread and I rented season 1 to see what all of the buzz was about it. I had a really hard time getting into the first 3-4 eposides...the writing was semi-poor, the actors were still becoming acclimated with their characters, the sister makes me want to hang myself from my ceiling fan.

Having said all of that, I absolutely LOVE that show and season 2 was fantastic. I still despise the sister, but I have been looking forward to season 3 coming out. I know what we will be watching after we return from New Orleans next week! YAY!

p.s. I used to watch Michael C. Hall on Six Feet Under where he played a homosexual who used to hump a large black cop. It took a little time for me to accept him in this type of role, but he has done a great job. Dexter would be a dream role to most actors.

p.p.s. I did hear that the actors who play Dexter and his disgusting sister are dating in real life. Didn't know they got married. And what is up with Dexter's hair in the third season? Ew.

Yeah I dunno. I didn't have any particular acclimation period and I don't see any big differences in quality through any part of the 3 seasons and I don't have particular characters that bother me.

I don't say it is without flaws but I am just thoroughly entertained by it.

My thoughts don't go much deeper than: I like the killin'.

Oh yeah? I liked the first 2 seasons. Thanks for the heads up.

Going back in this thread, there was a recommendation of Sleeper Cell. I would check that out but I have never seen it anywhere.
