Default Ganch - What the hell do you do for a living?

You're the smartest guy on this forum. Are you a pro? What other jobs have you had in your lifetime?

One thing's for sure, he can't be a pro - because clearly JJ's the only pro on here.

true, which is why no one accepted the JJGold challenge.

I worked on Wall Street as an quantitative equity trader before running my own statistical arbitrage desk and then hedge fund.

I sold my hedge fund interest and now do advantage gambling full time.

Ganch- Nice to see that you finally took a swing. I was afraid that you were getting too old to step into the box.

I'm sorry, I forgot how plugged in you were.

Quantitative trading is not a monolithic asset class. Some quant strategies have been getting hurt, some have been doing well.

Well now that you've been asked about your professional history Ganch I'll shoot one too. I've always been curious what your educational background was. I have no doubts that you succeeded in a pretty rigorous statistics-based program of some sort. I'd also be curious how you transitioned from university into your equity trader position. Cheers...

Bachelor's in math, Master's in economics.

If you want to know the rest, you'll have to buy the book.

I wonder if Ganch got bounced from Wall Street due to insider trading? Why in the hell would he be here with degenerate gamblers?

When I began coming to the forum a few months ago, two posters helped make me want to continue visiting -- Ganch and, you guessed it, JJgold. In addition to the many other astute posters, these two stood out, for vastly different reasons of course.

Too bad, when I was getting my degree in math many years ago, my professors didn't explain things as clearly as Ganch. His writings make me nostalgic for my happy college days many years ago.
And JJ -- well I guess I was impressed with JJ just being JJ.

When I decided to finally signup so I could post I said to myself "oh no, not another choosing of a user name - I can never think of one I like". And so in honor of jjgold ( sorry Ganchrow, I couldn't do much with your name) I became hhsilver.

Recently, for reasons related to another thread that I won't get into here, I came to regret my choice. But since I don't believe in ghosts I guess I'll continue to be hhsilver.

Ganch, you make me feel like a young math student again - Thanks.

I can't believe you were so honest with everyone about your work/educational background. The way you explain yourself on here is amazing. While my education is math and science based sometimes when going through your stuff I sit back and really have to take a good look at it. Read and re read a few times till it starts to make sense. I had one statistics professor who knew I gambled and I could pull figures out on what the probability of a lot of things were (cards, dice etc) but that was because I just knew what they were. If asked for a formula on how to figure it out I really had to think. Because honestly if you know the odds are 6-5 why would you need a formula?

Keep posting Ganch even the stuff I have trouble following as it's always informative.

And JJ only believes the guys who you can trust are the degenerate gamblers because you know

    A) They will stiff you
    B) They won't stiff you.

while i am not saying if jj is right or wrong, it does make one wonder why ganch struts around the sbr forum...the money that could be made in other areas is a lot more. there are very few pro's in this business, and ganch may or may not be a pro. i've seen some math wiz's that could rob a casino and book, but were compulsive gamblers and lost it all....

so what is the deal with ganch, gancho, come clean...why are you on here betting and posting

he money that could be made in other areas is a lot more. th
not necessarily true. Fezzik quit being an actuary to gamble full time.

You can also use the money that you make gambling to invest in other areas such as real estate.

My theory is that Ganchrow is intellectually a committed libertarian, but emotionally still has the human sympathy that most, if not all of us, seem to be born with. He worries about the stark fact that gambling markets are essentially about the transfer of money from the, how can I put this, statistically astute to the not-so-statistically astute. The earning made from gambling is arguably of very little social value. It is not really growing the economy, expanding human knowledge or any other noble cause.

Hence, the aforementioned worry about others condition, leads him to try to educate the rest of us mugs so we have a least got a chance. We have been honorably defeated in a game of skill. At the very least we are not able to claim (and if true, a very large problem indeed for the libertarian) that we didn't know we were losing our money. We paid, in expected losses, for the fun of doing it after all!

If Ganchrow were a burglar (and if burglary were legal of course) he would have your house cleared from top to bottom in ten minutes flat while you slept, but he would have popped round the previous week for a friendly chat to let you know he was coming.
