NEW YORK (TICKER) -- Barry Bonds has bolstered his legal team and could be preparing to slap a lawsuit on Curt Schilling, the New York Daily News reported on its web site Thursday.

According to the report, Bonds retained San Francisco attorney Todd Schneider and Oakland attorney John Burris to represent him in a possible defamation lawsuit against the veteran Boston Red Sox pitcher.

"There's no guarantee any action will be taken," Burris told the newspaper. "The most important thing to communicate is that Barry's silence up until now is not an admission to anything."


Bonds, who hit career home run No. 756 on August 7 to pass Hank Aaron for the most in baseball history, already is the subject of the BALCO steroids investigation and is represented by Michael Rains in that matter. The BALCO grand jury reconvenes next month.

On the HBO program "Costas Now," Schilling discussed Bonds' former mistress, Kimberly Bell, and her potentially damaging grand-jury testimony. She reportedly testified that Bonds told her about his steroid use.

"If I wrote a book about Bob Costas and in that book I wrote about Bob Costas' girlfriend being on the road, and Bob Costas giving that girlfriend card-show money and I outlined your daily steroid regimen, I've got to believe your first line of defense is to sue my (butt) off," Schilling said on the program.

Schneider and Burris issued joint statements, the newspaper reported.

"Mr. Bonds retained Schneider and Burris because of the false nature of these statements," the statement read. "While pursuing Hank Aaron's home run record, Barry felt that it was more prudent to remain silent. Now that the record has been broken, Burris and Schneider will evaluate any and all statements attributed to him that are false."

Bonds belted his 759th career homer on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Braves.

Yes, Bonds seems like the lesser of the two evils. Schilling just bugs.

And speaking of like, I would like Roy Jones, Jr to retire. I am a huge fan of his legacy, but watching an avg fighter like Glencoffe Johnson, pound Jones into oblivion, was painful to watch.

RJT, I hope you are in agreement that Jones has no business fighting Tito Trinidad in January. Jones has been dominated by the recent capable fighters (Tarver and Johnson) that he has fought, and it's time to hang them up.

Yes and no.

Absolutely, I agree that his skills have vastly diminished, but his hand speed is still quite good, and he's still capable of beating some decent guys.

Could he beat the best at or near his weight class - specifically Calzaghe, Kessler and Chad Dawson? Of course not.

I wouldn't have minded at all if he retired after the Johnson loss, which was depressing watching Roy, who in his prime rarely got hit, get KO'd by an ordinary fighter with little punching power. His return against Prince Badi was a joke, but in his last fight against Hanshaw, Roy looked decent. I don't really have a problem with him fighting Tito in a fight which will generate high PPV numbers and make him a substantial sum of money. The fight also offers little risk for Roy, who will completely dominate the naturally smaller Trinidad.

It's always depressing watching fighters that fight for too long, and Roy's certainly a shadow of his former self, but there are far worse instances, such as Meldrick Taylor, and more recently Gatti. Jones' skill level isn't nearly what it once was, but I don't have much of a problem with him continuing to fight.

His other court case was dismissed with the "Game of Shawdows" writers. He has nothing to gain by this. All this will do is open up more cans of worms about his past. Bonds should just shut up instead of exposing himdself to more negatives about his past.
