I'll tell you this about Dr. Seuss: if it was up to him, he would not be earning that much.

He would have been dead against (pardon the pun) a lot of the things that have been done to his work since he died. He would not have approved of The Grinch movie, nor The Cat in The Hat movie, nor Seussical The Musical. His work has been used for fast food promos in a way that would have disgusted him.

His widow has openly gone against his wishes in allowing his work to be exploited. (But, from what I gather, he was a pretty cranky, crappy guy in a lot of ways so maybe she just figures, 'Screw it. I'll take the cash.')

In life, he turned down big dollar offers to have his characters sell burgers and be otherwise exploited many times.
