Gambling addict stole scratchcards

10 December 2005 06:15

A man addicted to gambling stole lottery scratchcards from the Norfolk newsagents where he was working - stealing a total of £3000 from his employer, a court heard.

Keith Bailey, 23, was said to be like a “bomb waiting to go off” when he got a job working at Martin newsagent, Cromer, which gave him access to the scratchcards. The thefts were discovered when discrepancies were noticed in the lottery scratchcard takings.

Bailey, of Mill Road, Cromer, admitted theft.

Guy Ayers, in mitigation, said: ”When someone with a gambling problem is given free access to lottery scratchcards it is was a bomb waiting to go off.”

He said that since his arrest his gambling was now under control. “He now just buys a £1 ticket on Wednesday and Saturday in the National Lottery.”

He said that Bailey was now working as a flower seller and had the support of his partner.

Bailey was ordered to pay £1500 compensation to his employer and was given a four months jail sentence suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to do 200 hours community punishment order.

Lottery tickets are gambling? It should be called stupidly volunteering to pay taxes.A monkey can play scratch off cards but they choose not to because they know they are losing propositions.I get a kick out of people when they get caught stealing for gambling purposes. They all suddenly say it's a disease they have like they were outside in the wind and caught the gambling bug virus like hay fever.hehe!Anytime someone says they ended up in trouble losing money gambling and are reforming their habits as not to let their disease take over again I know they are copping out and will be back gambling in no time.I want to just hear a gambler who got in trouble say I'm an idiot that was a rotten player or bettor and was selfish not thinking about my family's well being and I still love gambling but I can't do it.It's my friggin fault, not a diseases fault.

I would like to see that myself, but we will never hear it.

No one should ever put their family at risk when gambling, period.
