Default Apple may launch cheaper iPhone model this year, analyst says

Why am I not shocked by this news. I think we all had to know this was coming at some point in the near future.

Apple may launch cheaper iPhone model this year, analyst says

Apple may introduce a model of its iPhone this year that is 50 percent cheaper than the handsets that went on sale in the U.S. last month, JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst Kevin Chang said.

The new model, based on Apple's thin iPod Nano, may cost less than $300, Chang said today by telephone from Taipei, citing a patent Apple filed in the U.S. and components suppliers he declined to identify. Apple began sales of two iPhone models priced at $499 and $599 on June 29.

A lower-priced iPhone may win customers away from rivals Nokia and Motorola, with Chang estimating Apple may ship as many as 40 million units of the new handset in the fiscal year ending September 2008. Apple will probably sell the new phone with several wireless carriers, unlike the five-year exclusive agreement it has with AT&T for the current iPhone, Chang said.

"We'll see this new iPhone having a noticeable impact on the handset market," Chang said. The new model may be introduced as early as the fourth quarter, he said.

Jill Tan, a Hong Kong-based spokeswoman for Apple, declined to comment on the report.

JPMorgan analyst Bill Shope in New York, who covers Apple, cautioned investors about Chang's predictions.

"The potential for a low-end, subsidized phone from Apple seems unlikely in the near term," Shope wrote in a separate report today. "Perhaps Apple will choose to eventually replace its iPod family with phones over time, but it could be premature to assume this will happen in volume any time soon."

Apple may release the next version of the iPhone in the first half of next year, Shope said. It will still be "high- priced" and support so-called third-generation networks for connecting to the Internet at faster speeds.

The new iPhone model won't have a touch screen like the current handset and will likely be controlled by a scroll wheel similar to those used on Apple's iPod music and video players, Chang wrote in the report published Monday. It will also have fewer functions, such as limited Internet browsing, he wrote.

Simpler features would allow Apple to sell the handset with multiple carriers, as operators won't need to customize their wireless networks for the phone's services, Chang said. Subsidies provided by carriers may further lower the price of the new model to as little as $99, he said.

Apple ran out of iPhones at more than half its 164 stores less than a week after introducing the handset, and AT&T said it sold out at its 1,800 outlets within 24 hours. Apple said it is delivering iPhones to its stores and AT&T shops every day.

This doesn't surprise me at all... I expect that a lot of companies will make newer and better products at a cheaper price.. I believe this is to keep our economy afloat a little longer and flood the public with the coming new technologies... The 61" LED is not much more expensive then the LCD and not even close to the LCD's initial price when they came out...

By the way I'm holding out on the "wearables"...

Hate to say that its not going to happen...I see the Apple I phone as the next phone to have and its not going away anytime soon. Look at the I-Pod and you will see that the Iphone is going to be just as popular...JMO

Iphone is hackable now. The European dude who cracked the CSS DVD also cracked the Iphone without activation.

He said phone work with Wi-FI and all Ipod functions. But not able to use the phone to talk as At&T is the only provider now.

if there were another service provider, all Iphone would work the same.

Now that the Iphone is out, I'm interest to see the other brands new smart phone that will bump that Iphone down a few notches.

I think it will be hard for them to drop the price too soon. Lot of expensive tech going into it that is less likely to drop in price like ipods did.

And now Apple come up with the iPod touch:

Wi-fi and 8/16GB storage is damn tempting. Although I've got a 60GB iPod, I think I might get one purely for the internet capabilities. Anyone who gets one, please let everyone know how good/bad they are.

The I-phone is a piece of sh1t. The internet on that thing is so slow that it reminds me of the movie Driving Miss Daisy. I wouldn't pay more than $100 bucks for that crap.

JB most people don't use phones for net, it is an e-mail, music, phone type device

I have posted on it and not that slow, true they are not on the broadband network YET but once they are they blow all phones away. The battery life though can be better.

I hear ya JJ. When a company can deliver a scaled down mobile internet device, with relatively good speed and unlimited internet freedom ( not a mobile network) , thats when I'll slap down four or five hundred dollars. Until that day comes I'll stick with the blackberry.

My buddy has an I-phone and he says the keyboard is an absolute nightmare.

I have one guy, keyboard takes about 2 weeks to learn because it is sensitive to touch, it is a the most user friendly smart phone I have ever seen and I have tried them all. The blackberries have better keyboards. Plus I-Phone has built in Wi-_FI and free signals not hard to find.

apple got bunch of angry complaints about the price drop, so they're giving 100 dollars rebate to those who paid full price for their 8gb phone.

what kind of shitty deal is that, they still end up losing 100 dollars, because apple dropped the price by 200 dollars.

also why doesn't someone just return the iphone and buy the new one at cheaper price?

Apple shouldn't have to rebate anyone. That is the risk you take when you want to be the first to own the newest electronics. Prices drop fast on all electronics, it is just the way it is.

Probably because you can't. Some places only allow certain amount of days on electronics, and sometimes no returns on opened items.

iphone is great, but their web browser is still pain in the ass to use. it always load the webpage all zoomed out, and you have to zoom in by pinching on it. if you're not familar with the webpage, it is pretty hard to find stuff.
