Bookie must pay up for bizarre bet

An Irish bookmaker who offered odds of 14-1 that Al Gore would be the next high-profile American arrested paid out on Friday after police detained the former vice-president's son, also named Al.

Having not specified which Al bettors could back, Paddy Power said about of the 50 people who placed money on the rank outsider being arrested had been quick to claim their winnings.

"We got a good stoning thanks to the vice-president's son," the company said.

The "bizarre coincidence" would cost it more than $13 600 (R191 352).

Al Gore III, 24, was stopped for speeding and arrested for drug possession after a sheriff's deputy smelled marijuana and searched his car.

Paddy Power, well known in Ireland for wacky publicity stunts and for offering bizarre bets, offered odds on July 3 that had made Paris Hilton the 2-1 favourite to be arrested.

It had ranked President George Bush and Bill Gates among the outsiders on odds of 33-1 and 50-1 respectively. - Reuters

They got their money's worth out of the publicity, though.

The odds aren't very high............only 14-1 on the meant to be Gore II. And, c'mon, even tho he isn't well liked, only 33-1 on the President being arrested ??? WTF? Should be 330-1.
As with all gimmick bets, the vig is high. So, they weren't hurt very much by paying off on Gore.

Does that mean all the other bets are now losing bets? I suspect some wont be happy about that
