Default The Drew Brees story - a regular guy maybe even an SBR poster

I remember him in high school 60 miles up the road from me. He was good in high school but the Texas Longhorns said nope, too small. How many folks know off the top of their head where he played in college? Anyway, the guy is a regular guy. Maybe he is Nicky or BrentCrude or someone?

Beantown threw up a thread about Brady having a much stronger arm than Manning. Well for sure Brees has one of the weakest arms in the league.

The name on the NFL Championship trophy is of course Vince Lombardi. His QB was also a regular guy with a weak arm named Bart Star. I'm sure Vice is smiling at seeing the QB who was too small, had a weak arm and his home town college said couldn't play hoist the Lombardi trophy. Way to go Drew or is Pavyracer?

Purdue. If I am not mistaken, he was their QB when Georgia set the biggest comeback of all time in a bowl game record against Purdue. I could be mistaken though.

Yeah Orton followed Brees at Purdue. Who was then followed by Curtis Painter, oddly enough, the Colts current backup. I'm a huge Purdue fan (so naturally I am usually pissed off on Saturdays) but they have a history of pretty great QBs. Add Jim Everett, Bob Griese, and Len Dawson to the already impressive list.

Brees has always been a winner.

He went 28-0-1 in his two years as a starting quarterback at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. For those that don't know, that's big time football.

He also was NOT a first round draft pick.

Imagine all that. Grew up in Austin but Texas said f\*\*k off short stack. Was a great college QB but the pros said your arm is weak.

Do you think the Chargers regret losing Brees? Philip Rivers was taller, had the big arm, and seemed like your prototype nfl qb. Now, Rivers is one hell of a quarterback, but hasn't been winning the big ones, thus far. It seems like the blame in SD has all been shifted to either Norv Turner or Ladainian Tomlinson. Somehow, Rivers gets a pass.

It will be interesting to see how each of their careers pan out.

I like Brees and agree that he is a winner. The saints have a lot of restricted/unrestricted free agents. It will be interesting to see the team they field next year.

He is okay, he has been the starting QB on a playoff team 3 out of 9 years, not the model of consistency or greatness, so, yes he could be a gambler, but let the love affair begin.

He looks alot like Fran Tarkington did in the 60's.Even money that he's Fran's bastard son.

Also coming back from what appeared to many to be a career ending shoulder injury makes his story even more great. Brees is a very deserving Champion and seems like a genuinely good guy.

Now that he's on top it will soon be time to tear him down and search for the skeletons in his closet. I hope it turns out to be something more creative than sex addiction.

I cant remember what else the Chargers got in that trade. But wtf Rivers is a stud. Plus keep in mind most of SD's games are outdoors which favors the stronger arm guys(wind and rain).

Another interesting twist to the story is the chargers passed chance to get Vick and got Tomlinson with the 5th pick of first round(if memory serves) and Brees with the first pick in the 2nd round of the same draft........pretty nice move. Not 100% sure, but i think the chargers also got picks that landed them Kaeding from trading away Vick's pick.

They actually had to release him. They did get a draft pick as compensation though. Not sure exactly how all that worked out.

In '06, with Brees in his first year with them, Saints reached NFC finals (lost to Phila). That's hardly a one hit wonder. He, and they (it's still a team game, I think), will be back for more.
