    Question cellphone question

thinking about getting a new cellphone. has anyone in the USA know what is a good cell provider that let you browse the web? what i want to do is able to make bets on the greek using the device. tmobile's web service is way way too slow.

any recommendation on the cellphone and/or cellphone provider is appreviated.

I think Sprint has the fastest and best data service. I have been with them for about 5 years and they keep getting faster and better.

As far as phones. I would recommend a smartphone like the Treo I use. But there are many to choose from.

thanks. are you able to check the scores on espn.com and make bets on your sportsbook? what about http://www.sbrodds.com/...does that work on your spring web service?

When I was able to bet at Pinnacle, I had no troubles betting off my Treo.

Yes. You can check scores on the phone through the Wap Espn site. You could go to the regular site, but takes longer to load.

SBRlines is the problem. That problem is with the phone software, not the cell service. I am currently looking for a phone that SBRlines will work on. We need a phone Flash will work on. I even started a thread asking smartphone users to test SBRlines to see if it works on their phones.

how fast is the wap service? tmobile has the internet service for 5.99/month. i tried it for 10 min then realized it is a piece of crap...i am limited only to very few webpages and those all text webpages still take forever to load.

i am curious what is the speed you were able to load...say regular www.espn.com? 56k?

Wap is websites made for mobile phones. Do a search on Sprints EVDO service. I am posting on my Treo right now.

I am not sure on the speeds, but it is faster then 56k.

Buy an unlocked/unbranded phone off of ebay and use a different browser with the 5.99 plan. Works fine for me.

Their browser restricts you. If it's unbranded, you definitely can go to more sites with the $5.99 plan if you use Opera.

I put my bets in with Skybook with my two year old nokia 6230.

Personally, I'd wait a couple of weeks and get an iphone through Cingular when they come out. They are supposed to provide full internet access rather than just WAP so you should be able to access any page that you can on your PC. The only drawback is that they aren't G3 capable yet but i'm sure that's coming in the future. However, it should still be fast enough for what you want to do.

You can do that already on any smartphone. Like on my Treo.

But to check scores, its faster to use the ESPN Wap site.

To bad the iPhone is on Cingular, because their data service sucks.

    Hey Pico.

I am currently connected through my Treo as a wireless modem, on the USB port of my laptop. I went and did a quick speed test at Broadband Reports, from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

    389KB Down
    131KB Up

That is through the Sprint EVDO network.

I will be posting tonight like this, to see how it is. By the way, my cable connection is 10MB down/1MB up. Big cut in speed this way.

From a local test site I'm getting around 1.25MB down/145MB up.

This would be fast enough for the casual web surfer on regular PC's.

I have a T-Moblie sidekick II...with the unlimited internet for an extra $20.00 per month. I can view forums and bet at most sites as long as they dont have frames like 5dimes. I can get betjam and the greek to load. I never tried the WAP service from t-mobile so I cant comment there...but if you turn off images then most pages load pretty quick.

Not true JJ. These things are starting to become your multi-purpose tool. Email, internet, etc. etc.

for the greek, it is easier to call it in. pinny, i would imagine sidekick2 would be awesome...unless you're in canada, can't use t-mobile to place wagers at pinny
