Default You Be The Judge... Do I Have A Case?

    Hey guys, here's the situation.

Before the beginning of this NBA season, I placed a wager on Blake Griffin to win the Rookie of the Year. About a week after I placed this wager, it was announced that Blake Griffin was supposed to miss the first 2 months of the regular season. Before this 2 months was up, it was then announced that he was expected to return in January. Then, before January came, it was announced that he was going to be out for the season.

Now, my question is, am I entitled to getting this wager voided since there was no action on it. In a horse race, if your horse never starts, then your bet is voided, correct?

Let me know what you guys think, should I fight to get this wager back? Do I have a case?

Good idea. Just checked it... can't find anything on player props anywhere though.

I believe it should be voided. Starting one game to me would mean playing opening day.

Thanks for the help Jim. I'm going to contact my book about this. I'll mention this as well:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0..._n_422173.html

I'm sure that I can provide them with a more credible source than the Huffington Post if they ask for it. This way, I can hopefully get my refund now instead of having to wait until the end of the regular season to show that Blake Griffin didn't play a single game.

    Hey Jim,

I haven't contacted them yet, but the book is IAS Bet. After reading the posts and seeing that I do have a legitimate case, I just wrote asking them to void the wager since press releases have revealed that Blake Griffin will miss the rest of the season, and will not play a single regular season game.

I'll wait for the reply from IAS Bet and hope that they respond in a quick and reasonable manner.

IMHO Ante-post rules apply and your bet is a loser.

I'm rooting against you, just because you linked to Huffpo.

I know that in future bets like the Kentucky Derby they have odds on more horses than will be in the field.

If you bet a horse and it does not run you still lose your wager.

Think about it from the books side:

Lets say that Kobe is +150 and Lebron is +150 to win the MVP in the futures book before the season, everyone else is over +800.

On the day before the season starts Kobe is injured for the year, Lebron goes on to win the MVP. Do you really see the book paying the Lebron bets and refunding the Kobe bets?

I doubt you will get your money back. Tough break betting this and Griffin going down for the year. Might be worth a shot to contact them and find out for sure.

    Question:

Could they allow it to carry on for next season? Since he didn't play this year wouldn't he be a rookie next season too?

even if the void your bet, you have to wait until the end of the regular season,

    Hey guys,

Well obviously Round 1 went against me, they cited it as being an all in event. Before I post what I wrote back, I just want to say that it's not my intention of making this book look bad by them not voiding my wager, but rather to post my case here to everyone and see if I can get any advice as to how I could get this money back. Here's what I countered with:

    Hello,

I understand that when it comes to resolving this issue, the answer is not very clear cut.

I searched IASbet's Terms and Conditions at:

    http://www.iasbet.com/help/company_r...#sportsbetting

And I noticed that there was no mention of basketball futures being an "all in event", and therefore it should not be subject to the typical all in event rule.

The fact is that Blake Griffin has not started a single game this season and will not start a game this eason. If he were to have played in the season's first game, and then injured himself in the game for the rest of the season, then I understand that I have no case. But the injury occurred *outside* of the time which the bet has action. Along with the announcement about Blake Griffin missing the rest of the season being recently announced, this means that my bet had no action during the entire duration of the event. This, in my opinion, is like betting on a horse that is forced to pull out of a race in the last minute, or betting on a tennis player who must forfeit their match *prior* to it starting due to a sudden illness. In these cases, the bet would be refunded, right? Any action that IASbet takes in, or any sportsbook for that matter, should be viewed as a potential liability for the sportsbook, meaning that there is a chance that the sportsbook will have to pay out on that action. In this case, the sportsbook accepted a bet for which it turned out they had absolutely no liability on. There was *never* any potential of this wager paying out because of the fact that Blake Griffin will not play a game this season, which has been documented through press releases throughout this season.

Call them and speak with someone live.

On another note, you should have known the rule before you even placed your wager. Live And Learn.

The book(s) will have to pay the winners for the named rookie of the year so they are in a lose lose situation. They have to pay the winners who bet on the player who does win and by canceling the player whom the most money likely came in on they cannot win that bet. For a bet to be a legit bet both sides must have an equal opportunity to win and lose. In this case the book(s), should they cancel Blake Griffin bettors, they are really in a lose lose situation. Just a thought off the top. Both sides on a bet must have the chance to win and to lose. I'm pretty tired and didn't put a lot of thought here, but I've seen this before. Let us know and we can inquire on your behalf to try and get a response from them. You do have to consider their position though by canceling the Griffin wagers, leaving them lopsided on all wagers involving him. Again, both sides must have the chance to win and to lose in order for it to be a fair situation.
