Neteller announces plan to disperse funds to US customers; plan contingent on a "resolution." Neteller issued a press release today saying that it will be able to pay balance holders via its standard transfer methods if it can resolve matters with the United States Attorneys Office. Neteller made the vague statement "The Company has advised the USAO that it will use its best efforts to resolve the investigation no later than 13 July 2007," implying that it can meet preset guidelines set by the USAO.

Disburse means "distribute money." Disperse means "distribute or scatter." Disperse applies to everything except money.

You can disperse knowledge to your students. You can disperse an unruly crowd gathering in your lobby. (And the crowd itself can disperse.) You can disperse flyers about your upcoming sale.

But if it is money you want to distribute, disburse it. The word comes, in part, from the French word for purse, bourse. If it comes from your bourse, disburse it.

Taco, "lowercase" is one word. There is also no subject in the second sentence. Your "I'm" in the last sentence should be "I was".

I think I qualify as literate. I studied English Composition at University of Toronto.

Setting aside how embarrassingly bitter and anal this complaint would be if it were correct, the use of "disperse" is not strictly wrong in that bulletin.

If you really were that anal, you could make a case that it is a marginal usage. But it does have to disperse funds as part of the definition of disperse right here in the dictionary I keep at my desk. (Holt, Rinehart, Winston Compact Dictionary of English).

Bottom line: this thread is even more ridiculous than some of you may have realized.

It was a regular book that received my disbursement of funds on that game, not another player.
