Anyone use a Notebook and wireless here?

I know this is a bit off topic, but I have been wanting a notebook computer for a while for all of my capping, so no matter where I am, I can be plugged in. Obviously I would want wireless internet. The company I work for give us a small Dell discount. Just curious if anyone uses a notbeook for the same reasons I am wanting one for and what do you think is a good one? Need one fast enough to keep 4-5 browser open and maintain a fast internet speed. Would love to keep it under $1000. Anyone have any opinions?

I bought a DELL notebook last spring and I absolutely love it.

I keep seeing the ads and prices keep coming down. DELL constantly is offering special offers and whatnot, so keep your eyes open. But, sounds like you are already well hooked up.

Dell Inspiron 6000 is what I am using now. I don't like the look, but it was damn cheap for all the RAM, HD, and processor I got. Dell is running tons of sales all the time. I used a 35% coupon, but they offer $750 off anything over $2000. Or $500 off of the 6000 at $1500 or higher. Go to Google and type "Dell Coupons" before buying. You will find several results in the top 5 that will list the best deals.

Im currently using a Dell XPS notebook for my main system. I wanted a notebook that could completely replace my desktops, and this thing has. Wanted it to be able to game if I wanted. Plus this thing has a 17" widescreen display.

Its all wireless. Bluetooth inside so I can use a bluetooth mouse , meaning no wires or wireless station plugged into a USB port. I use a Linksys wireless router, but it can be flakey at times. Im thinking about getting a netgear rangemax router, and trying that out.

But all in all, I like having the freedom of taking this where I want in my home and on the road. Not many people can take their main system where ever they go.

The thing with Dell they have a nice warrenty service. My battery had died last month and it was replaced for free, and I had them replace the display because it had little too much light leakage for my taste. They replaced it for free, and they sent a tech out to your home to do so. You just pick the warrenty that you feel you will need while customizing your notebook. Their tech support on the phone takes alittle getting use to, they are all in India. Hard to understand.

I think Im going to buy a 50" Dell Plasma the 1st of the year when I get back from my vacation in Florida.

Not sure what the Toshiba warrenty and notebooks are like.

Have you ever experienced it over heating? I have posted at covers.com and so many have responded saying they have had problems with dell's. A lot of people are backing Toshiba's & IBM's. I am not really sure what to get. I want a fast computer with wireless for surfing the net for my gambling needs. Looking at pent m process 1.7 ghz 1.0mb ram 60+gb hd. I have looked at the Inspiron 6000, the R series for the IBM Thinkpad & a couple different Toshiba models. Why did you choose Dell?

a chick I was banging that moved to vegas had a laptop I was working on that overheated...a Dell, not sure of the model, but it was on the bed and the fan was able to circulate the air properly...

I looked that IBM R series too. I think it is a better looking computer and better built, but if I wanted to get all the specs I have on my 6000 from Dell I would have ended up paying over $2000, where I got my Dell for $1350. For me it came down to Dell offering such a low price (which coupons) that I couldn't justify paying more just for a better looking computer with just slightly better build.

The cheaper notebooks that use a desktop processor get real hot. I have a 5150 wireless that I regretted buying. Your hands sweat enough when gambling!
Dell later told me that "notebooks" use desktop CPUs and "laptops" use the mobile centrinos or whatever they're called.

Anyways, TigerDirect has USB laptop cooling pads that help. The PC fan never comes when using it. They cost about 20 bucks.

Mine never overheats.
Like Bill said, if you want a notebook, dont get one with the P4 with Hyperthreading. Those get tooo hot for the notebooks.

I have the XPS2 with the following:

Pentium M 2.13GHZ
2GB RAM DDR2 533MHZ (Crucial)
100GB 7200RPM Harddrive
6800go Ultra with 256MB
17" Widescreen Display
DVD +/- DL Burner

You cant beat the low prices that Dell delivers with coupons and stuff. But if you do buy a notebook from Dell, dont load the RAM up thru them. Get the least amount you can and get the RAM else where.

I havent bought a notebook cooler like Bill mentioned, but it will keep the notebook alot cooler, as the fans have more room to blow out the heat.

Get Bluetooth in your notebook. Makes for less wires coming out of your notebook. I use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Only wire coming from my notebook right now is the A/C cord.

I choose Dell because of the lower price I got with the coupon, and the machine can game with the great video card it has in it. At the time, it was the fastest card any notebook had.
