    Default OT- Floppy Disks (HELP!!)

I'm hoping one of the computer experts on here can save me. I've got 6 months worth of data on a floppy disk which basically details all of my betting information for the entire year. I know i probably shouldn't have used a floppy but i did and here i am. I now can't access any of this information. I put my floppy in and i get the error message

The disk in drive A is not formatted
Do you want to format it now?

I may be wrong but i believe if i hit yes that i will lose all my information. Is this the case?

Secondly, at one point i got almost to where i could access the information so i tried to both copy the data and move the data to a different folder on my pc but it stated that it couldn't read the data on my floppy so i was unable to retrieve it this way. Is there any way of saving this vital information? Also, i was using openofficeorg 2.1 if that's of any help.
I would appreciate any assistance in this matter as any of you who keep detailed information know how much this would completely suck to lose it all.

    Hi,

Indeed, if you hit yes, all your data will be lost.

Have you tried another Floppy Disk, at times it could be the Floppy Drive itself not the Floppy Disk.

Im sorry to be the grim reaper of bad new but you might have lost it all...Floppys are sesitive to magnets and stuff and have a short life span as far as usuage goes. I might suggest to see a techy to see if they can retrieve the data..

Floppys are so 6-7 years ago

I didn't hit format since i was pretty sure the info would be lost. And other floppys do work so i know it's the disk itself. Thanks to those who pm'd me some ideas, i'm just going to take it to a techie to see if it can be saved.

I'd try popping the disk in (do NOT hit 'yes' to format the disk!) and try these things:

Click Start-->Run and type "cmd" in the run box. At the dos prompt, type "a:" and press enter. Then type "dir" and press enter.. see if you can bring up a directory listing this way at least.

Double-click My Computer, then right-click on the floppy drive (a icon. Click 'properties' from the pop-up menu. Click the tools tab, and check the disk for errors. Maybe this tool will be able to repair the disk.

Went to a techie who wasn't able to retrieve the information!

Bought one of those usb flashdrive things now to store all my info, plus i'll back up all my stats on both my laptop and desktop. Live and learn i guess, even tho it sucks royally to lose the entire years data.

Good Stuff Cobra. The USB Flash Drive is the way too go now-a-days. Some even come with security software (Password Protected).
