A group of Arab-American students in the class of 2011 at Dearborn's Edsel Ford High told school officials they were showing pride in their class with their choice of sweatshirts Monday.








But school officials disagreed, confiscating the sweatshirts and scheduling meetings with the students and their parents because the images on the sweatshirts referenced the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. Along with the words, "You can't bring us down," the sweatshirts featured the No. 11 as the twin towers with windows included on each digit. The school's mascot, a thunderbird, was flying nearby.
"The whole design gave prominence to the 9/11 tragedy, and of course was very upsetting to staff and students," said an e-mail message sent Monday and Tuesday from the district to local groups and individuals. A similar e-mail message explaining the situation was sent to parents and staff Monday.
School officials said the students didn't realize the sweatshirts would be perceived negatively and would not be punished.
An estimated 300 people attended a public meeting on the topic Tuesday evening at Salina Intermediate School. Superintendent Brian Whiston and Edsel Ford High Principal Hassane Jaafar were among those who addressed the predominantly Arab-American crowd during the 20-minute meeting.


Schools spokesman David Mustonen said the students complied when they were asked to remove the sweatshirts, which they had made at Gibraltar Trade Center for $25 apiece over holiday break.
"Kids not thinking, not realizing the consequences of something they thought was pretty innocent," Mustonen said. "Their thought was, 'You can't bring us down. We're the class of 2011.' "
Jennifer Browne, president of the Edsel Ford Parent Teacher Student Association, said she believes the students were simply trying to promote their class. "It's unfortunate that it came across badly," she said.
Michael Steinberg, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, praised the decision by school officials not to punish the students.

Why are there windows in the 11's? Why do you need to make a 9/11 reference to prove your point? I have heard some bad things about that school. I have heard from Arab Americans that kids in that school might as well go back home. They are referred to as boaters and cause a scene during the national anthem and refuse to take their hats off. They are known for saying "Happy 9/11 Day" on 9/11. It's disgusting, if you don't wanna be here no one is holding you back, oh wait yes, one thing, the American dollars is.

That being said, I would never go to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Yemen, Kuwait, etc. and disrespect their countries traditions. It's pathetic.

I've worked in Dearborn,MI before, and most business signs are in arabic also. Don't like it myself, but whatever. By the way, minors do not have rights like adults do. They do not have freedom of the press.

nothing wrong with being offended with something. personal choice and it's not an either or issue.

Taste is personal. Taking offense to something has different levels. If some guy wants to pick his nose at the office or in class, I might be offended but not a lot. If he then starts to eat his boogers, I might get grossed out but still won't get so offended that it will effect my life. If the guy starts jerking off, ya my offended level might increase to the point that I will go over and tell him to stop.

I agree (the cartoonist was from Denmark btw).

IIRC, however that incident brought Islamic Fundamentalists out on to the streets in huge numbers, claiming that their view (and that of Sharia Law) regarding blasphemy should override the national laws concerning freedom of speech in European countries.
